

Lucy passed away at the age of 89 to join the love of her life, Al Burciaga, on Sunday, April 24, 2022. Lucy was a lifelong resident of El Paso where she actively served in roles of leadership in her community and church. Lucy served on the Board of Directors for the Houchen Community Center. A 1951 graduate of Bowie High School, she was employed by El Paso Machine & Steel for 13 years and later worked for the Central YMCA.
Lucy became a member of the United Methodist church at El Buen Pastor UMC and later Emmanuel UMC, both in El Paso, Texas. She was a Church Lay Leader, and she served as Church Treasurer, PPRC (Pastor-Parish Relations Committee) and other offices. She continually held a UMW office in the Local Unit for 56 years. Eight years as District UMW vice-President and President. Seven years as Conference UMW Officer and then Vice President to finish her eight-year Conference tenure. In her UMW journey, she represented the Rio Grande Conference UMW by serving as the West Gulf Regional School of Missions Registrar. Four years-South Central Jurisdiction Core Planning Group Treasurer and the first Hispanic President. Her second four years were as Women’s Division Director, where she was unanimously elected the first Hispanic women’s Division Officer to serve as Vice-President of the Section of Membership and Organizational Development. Lucy also served as President of Church Women United for the UMC. In addition, she served on many mission trips with the UMW Global Ministries throughout South America and the Philippines.
Lucy's greatest role in life was that of being a loving wife, mother, grandmother and great grandmother. She could often be found in the kitchen, with Al cooking any number of their grandchildren's favorite dishes. Lucy is survived by her three sons, Daniel (Sylvia) of Manchester, Maryland, Gilbert (Virginia) of Austin, Texas and David (Norma) of Houston, Texas. She is also survived by 17 grandchildren; Christina (Brian) Toronyi, Danielle (Justus) Gilmore, Renee (Mehrdad) Namvar, Aaron (Shawna) Burciaga, Alex Burciaga, Melissa (Derek) Daley, Greg (Caitlyn) Burciaga, Steven (Jennifer) Burciaga and Eric Burciaga. Great-grandchildren include Tyra, Naomi, Avery and Tate Gilmore, Vincent, Sophia and Noah Namvar, Adam and Ethan Toronyi, Halle, Myah and Carly Burciaga, Canyon and Harper Daley and Zenaya and Soledad Burciaga. She is also survived by one sister (Blanca Arias) of El Paso, Texas. A memorial will be held at El Divino Redentor United Methodist Church, 3131 E. Yandell Dr., El Paso, Texas, on June 18, 2022, from 2:00 - 3:00 pm.
