On the first day of high school Physical Science, Mrs. Reinhardt asked the class what they had done over the summer. All the usual answers reverberate throughout the class until we get to this one kid who says he read Stephen Hawking's "A Brief History of Time."   Who the hell is this kid?  I turned around and met Manny for the first time with his contagious love of science.  I tell that story all the time.  Buddy, you are missed.

Hi dad, it’s Miranda, Ever since you’ve been gone my world has been crumbling apart. I know that I’ve got into trouble at school. It’s just been my emotions have been taking over me lately. It’s very hard for me and Wila especially. I remember when you used to play with the air conditioner all the time 😆 I’m just sad there’s no more of that, no more of your jokes, no more and visiting you near your bed after school. I just learned of Manny's passing. For many years he was a friendly face in the Department of Physics at UTEP. Always working, always smiling. He will be missed.

I’m sorry, I have strayed so, forgive me for that- I wish things could of been different for me and my siblings!! I  ditto everything my sis Delphi  wrote.   Minnow, we do have something in common,  May 4th being a special day for me also.  My oldest bday but 6 years later.   I pray for your mom n dad n the rest of the family. I am so saddened to know there won’t be another football game we get to talk about or another craft beer we discover. It saddens me that I only knew you for 39 years and I am heartbroken for everyone.

But I am also thankful. I am so lucky that God, the universe, fate, whatever you want to call it, provided me one an amazing role model and big brother. You taught me so much about hard work, sacrifice and how things that are worth doing are not easy.  The only thing I wish you would have taught me is how to angle punts properly in Madden and nail my opponents inside the 5. 

You were taller, you were smarter, you had so much more going for you than I did, but you never made me feel like my goals, ambition or choices were less important than yours and I will always remember that.  

This has been a difficult time for everyone and I know you are at peace. Don’t worry about Mary, the kids or anyone, we will be here for each other. Say hi to Tio Kiko. I will never forget you.

On this mortal plane you were a great friend, husband and father.  The world is a little less fun without you  here.  It was so very great to have known you.  My times at UTEP would have been so much less enlightening and entertaining.  You will be missed Manny.
To Mary and the family. My deepest condolences.  Please go with the Grace of God. Let Him assuage your grief and be your source of comfort during this time.  

Minnow I will never forget you.  The way you followed me around when you were little and I took you with me everywhere I went.  All the shows we saw, even though they were kiddy shows or not my bands, I delighted in seeing your happy face!  You were a great kid, a great son, a great brother,  a great husband  and most of all a great dad.  "Only the good die young" is no cliché.   RIP my beautiful cousin, I'll see you on the flip side.

Manny was truly a great friend and I loved him like a brother.  It grieves me deeply to hear of his passing.  Manny was instrumental in my marriage.  It was in a late night conversation with Manny at Hemingway’s that Manny convinced me to ask out my wife.  I am still amazed that in El Paso I would meet such a passionate hockey and New Jersey Devils fan. I still have to laugh every time I think of how we almost got into it when playing hockey once.  I have not been able to see him as much as I would have liked since grad school, and given the current travel and gathering restrictions I am troubled I will be unable to be there.  However, my thoughts and prayers are with Marry and the rest of his friends and family during this tragic time.  It is with great sorrow I sip my scotch and fondly remember Manny.
