Love Conquers All
Marcus was friendly, engaging, inquisitive loving and fun. He had a bright smile that could light up a room. He  was very family oriented, enjoyed spending time and celebrating at family gatherings. He loved sports, music and a good intellectual debate; he could be very opinionated. He was outgoing, made friends easily and enjoyed long standing relationships. His demise has created a void that is not easily filled.  Marcus you are and will be forever loved.

We met when we were 18 years old in El Paso, Texas, at Hawthorne House on the campus of Texas Western. I had come from New York, and Marcus and his brother had come all the way from Alaska. That’s how he got the nickname “Freeze.” I don’t remember who first called him that, but it stuck with our little circle — and it stayed with him all these years.

We were young men from different parts of the country, all trying to figure out who we were and who we were becoming. At Hawthorne House, we formed a close-knit bond, and Freeze was one of the people who made that time meaningful.
Even then, his character stood out. He was steady, genuine, and easy to be around. He was kind-hearted and sincere. The kind of person you respected, not because he demanded it, but because he lived it. Simply put, he was a good man.

Though I had not seen him in years, we spoke often during the last eight years. For that, I am deeply grateful. Those conversations reminded me of who he has always been.

What moves through us now is a silence — a quiet sadness, a longing for one more day, one more word. We may not understand why he left before we were ready to say goodbye. But little by little, we begin to remember not just that he died, but that he lived — and that his life gave us memories, friendship, and moments that will always remain with us.

Rest easy, my friend. You will not be forgotten.

I met Marcus Vance Chaffee, aka Freeze, in August 1966 as we entered the Freshman class at Texas Western College.  We were excited and enthusiastic young men embarking on a college career.  As years of friendship transpired, we spent way too much time pontificating over basketball.  Marcus and I also shared a medical disposition know as renal failure requiring dialysis three days a week.  We often collaborated and encouraged each other regarding this disease.  I considered Marcus a friend and our friendship lasted over 59 years.  I will truly miss our frequent phone calls.  May God bless you, Marcus, and may you rest in peace.

Marcus, we already miss you. As your closes friend we have share almost 60 years of  laughing, crying and a deep appreciation of what binded us together as friends.
They are saying you are now in a “better place” but selfishly I would rather you still be here with me, talking about basketball and anything else that comes to mind.
Please know that I will help Vanessa in any way I can, as she has lost so much in a brief  period of time.
I will share moments of our friendship in person at your memorial on March 7th at 10:00am.

           His spirit is at peace.   For those of us 
who truly knew him, let us keep his memory in our hearts.

Marcus.  Will. Be. Well. Missed,, I. Know. We. Influenced. Each. Other God bless us that way we were brothers from another mother, but our mothers were sisters and they loved each other powerfully and the powerfulness grew in us. Thank you for being my brother to the end.   I remember you roll with me at uncle Floyd’s funeral. I took you for a ride in my Mercedes CLSAMG it influenced you so powerful that you went home and bought you a Mercedes and stuck an AMG on your car.
