Margaret Osborne duPont

Margaret Osborne duPont, age 94 died at her El Paso home on October 24, 2012 surrounded by loved ones. She was the daughter of Eva and St. Lawrence Osborne and born on March 4th in Joseph, Oregon. Most of her childhood, her family lived in San Francisco where her love for tennis was born. Margaret and her family lived a block from the Golden Gate Public Courts. She was enamored by the game of tennis and soon began to play. The pro there saw she had an unmistakable talent. Margaret went on to be one of the best this world has ever seen. She won six Grand Slam singles titles: French Open in 1946 and 1949, Wimbledon in 1947 and the US Open in 1948, 1949 and 1950. She also won 21 Grand Slam women’s doubles titles (20 with tennis partner, Louise Brough). This record ties for the most Grand Slam titles ever won by a women’s doubles team. In addition to those achievements, she also won 10 Grand Slam mixed doubles titles. She was inducted into the International Tennis Hall of Fame in 1967, the Delaware Sports Museum and Hall of Fame in 1999 and in 2010 she was inducted into the US Open Court of Champions. From 1938 through 1958, DuPont went undefeated in ten Wightman Cup competitions, winning her ten singles and nine doubles matches. She also captained the U.S. team nine times, winning eight. She moved to El Paso in 1966 with her life-long friend, Margaret Bloss. Once in El Paso they began a horse business that is still in operation today. Margaret always loved living in El Paso and served on numerous boards and committees in this community. Her bright smile and infectious laugh will be sorely missed by many. Margaret was preceded in death by her parents, Eva and St. Lawrence Osborne and her brother Charles Osborne. She is survived by her son and daughter-in-law, William III and Pamela duPont of Orlando; grandsons William IV, Michael, Charles and Andrew; and life-long friends Margaret Bloss and Leigh Bloss of El Paso. I grew up in Bellevue Manor Wilmington DE near William duPont 's Bellevue and benefited from visiting tennis greats such as Maureen Connolly. MRSduPont has been an inspiration and I was able to play on her indoor court until snow collapsed the roof. She was a great influence in DE tennis.

I am so incredibly sad. I did not know of this until today. She was my hero growing up. I looked up to her as the real thing. She has left a legacy to one of the greatest tennis players that ever played the game but more importantly a champion with incredible integrity and humility. I am so blessed to have known her and very grateful to have a hero that put her mark on my journey. God Bless to Margaret, family and those close to her, she will be missed.

We live in the home that was owned by her sister-in-law, Marion duPont Scott in Camden, South Carolina. Margaret visited here many times and played tennis across the street. It is an unusual coincidence that we picked up the New York Times and noticed the obituary. Our condolences go to William and Pamela in Florida. Please preserve any Camden related keepsakes that may still exist. Margaret was part of the rich tapestry that was Camden, South Carolina.

We had the great honor of spending some time with Ms. duPont when photographing and interviewing her when she was inducted into the USTA Southwest Section Hall of Fame. She found a special place in our hearts immediately. What an absolutely delightful afternoon, rich with memories.
Our sincerest condolensces to the duPont and Bloss families. The tennis world and El Paso community have lost a legend; she will be missed dearly by all who knew her.
