Milton Jerome Cherno, August 19, 1924, passed away Thursday morning at age 93. One of Milton’s greatest prides, was that he was the last living starter on the 1941 El Paso High School basketball state championship team. He went from high school basketball to play at Texas College of Mines where he lettered both in basketball and football. He then went to Texas AM University, where again he lettered in both sports. For over 60 years, he was an avid golfer and a member of El Paso Country Club where he achieved a “hole in one”, and will greatly be missed by all his friends at the club.
Milton and his father where pioneers on South El Paso Street, his father Joe was the owner of United Army Supply Company, where Milton started managing the store at age 15. In 1950 Milton opened up his own business a block away, on South El Paso Street, International Dry Goods, which thrived for over 50 years.
Milton has been a member of Congregation B’nai Zion for over 70 years. He headed the Chevra Kadisha for over 50 years. He is the longest running trustee at Congregation B’nai Zion.
The most devoted husband to his wife of 68 years, Joan, who preceded him in death along with his sister Martha, father Joe, mother Nellie, and nephew Bernie Rothschild. He is survived by his children; Julie Bondi, Michael Cherno (Teresa) and Stewart Cherno. Grandchildren; Dr. Matthew Cherno, Ryan Cherno, and Aaron Bondi (Lindsey) nephews Lester (Wendy), Neil, Sylvian Rothschild. Sister in Law Susie Bendalin. Many loved nieces and nephews extended family and numerous friends. He was a devoted husband, father, uncle, cousin, and friend to us all he will be dearly missed. Pallbearers are as followed; Ryan Cherno, Dr. Matthew Cherno, Michael Cherno, Aaron Bondi, Sylvian Rothschild, Asher Feinberg, Ronnie Benbalin, Russell Lait. Honorary Pallbearers: Bernie Lauterback, Jack Eisenberg, Lester Rothschild, Dr. Stuart Kahn.
The family offers many thanks to all of his caregivers and physicians.
Milton loved and cherished all his nieces, nephews, and family members.
