Norman was born to Syrian immigrant parents, Leon John and Albina S. Ekery, in El Paso on February 2, 1937. He attended Vilas Elementary and El Paso High School and continued to earn his degree in Pharmacy at the University of Texas at Austin.
As a child growing up in Sunset Heights, he learned the art of working with the public and customer service ethic from his father who was the proprietor of Sunset Grocery. Norman’s life was a life lived with a spectrum of achievements, broad sense of humor and love of people. From becoming the youngest spelling bee champ at Vilas to his adult years where he held management positions at Gunning Casteel and Farah Manufacturing, held numerous offices in pharmacy associations and the state board, his impact was broad. Ultimately, he would finish his career as the owner and pharmacist of Freeway Pharmacy where he proudly served his customers for over 35 years.
The achievements he was most proud of were his marriage of 65 years and his three children.
Norman is survived by his wife, Hope, daughter Stefanie (John), son Leon (Lettie), daughter Roxanne (John), grandchildren Maggie, Emily (David), Warren, Amanda, Jake and Nick, great granddaughter, Alice, and brother, Dr. Fred Ekery and several in laws, nieces and nephews.
