Ramon Macias, Jr., "Chuno," loving husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, brother, uncle, and friend, went home to be with the Lord on Saturday, January 14, 2017, after a three year battle with liver cancer. Chuno is survived by his loving wife of 60 years, Elvira A. Macias; his children (Sons and Daughter-In-Law), Cathy (Willie Alarcon), Patsy (Roger Baeza), Ray III (Olga), Steve; Grandkids: Marco (Amanda), Tamara (Robert), Roger Jr. (Dinora), Stephanie (Cody), Jonathan (Sarah), Ray IV (Marisol), Reuben (Christine), Ryan, Robert, Rosalie, Rebecca; Great Grandkids: Isaiah, Kassandra, Emma, Sofia, Ryder, Victoria, Ellie, Jonathan II, Asher; his brothers, Mike, Ricardo, Bernie, Tury and his sisters, Carmen Cedillo, Irene Sobey, Bertha Garza and Cristina Macias and countless relatives and friends. Chuno was preceded in death by his parents, Ramon Sr. and Soledad “Chole”, his sister Maria, and his brother, Enrique “Henry.” Dad lived his life with gusto and never let anything ruin his positive attitude on life and love. For Dad, it was always “As well as can be expected!” Dad never complained and always had a great outlook on life even while battling cancer. A lifelong resident of Ysleta, he attended Mt. Carmel Catholic School, graduated from Ysleta High School, and received his Associates Degree from EPCC. Following high school, Dad was drafted into the Army during the Korean Conflict, received boot camp training at Ft. Bliss, TX, and spent his tour in Baltimore, MD, playing baseball with the Army baseball team. After leaving the Army as a Corporal, he married his childhood friend and lifelong sweetheart and partner in crime, Titi, on June 24, 1956. Then he worked as a plumber for Cox Plumbing intent on becoming a professional baseball player. However, starting a family with Cathy on the way, a professional baseball career did not pay enough to support a family, and Mom preferred not to move to Mexico. Dad was soon accepted into the El Paso Police Department. He proudly served a 33 year long career with the EPPD, spending 12 years as Patrolman and 21 years as Detective. Dad was one of the first detectives in the newly formed Crimes Against Persons Division – Sex Crimes. Spending 33 years with EPPD, he inducted his brother-in-law, and future EP Sheriff, Jimmy Apodaca, and mentored and worked with several co-workers, many becoming lifelong friends. Law enforcement was his life and love; however, he never let “work” get in the way of his family. He always made time for family, a dance and a song, a good cold beer and cigarette (or two or more), and always said, “It can’t get any better than this!” especially at family gatherings where he was head chef, making the menu and cooking steaks to order. Full of life, Dad could always be counted on to sing. His rendition of “Las Mananitas” for everyone was always a family favorite, much to Mom’s chagrin. Never to be outdone, Dad would sing along with (and many times out-perform) any Mariachi group performing at family gatherings. Dancing was as natural to Dad as walking, gliding with ease on the dance floor with Mom on his arm. Smooth and a natural performer, Dad always put his heart in everything he did. In retirement, he always lived for the day, many times on a whim and a moment’s notice taking a van ride to visit his kids near and far, the weekly penny poker games, going to the casino, and spending time at home watching baseball, or any other sport with Titi, sometimes with all the TVs on and keeping track of every game. Chuno always followed his boyhood favorite team, the Dodgers, and the Texas Rangers. He spent his free time coaching his sons, grandsons, nephews, friends, and co-workers. Known as “L” Coach to others, he will always be known as DAD to us. Dad was a lifelong member of Mt. Carmel Catholic Church and a patron of the Sacred Heart. Visitation will be on Monday, January 23, 2017, from 5:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m., at Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Catholic Church with recitation of the rosary at 7:00 p.m. Funeral Mass will be held on Tuesday, January 24, 2017, at 9:30 a.m., at Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Catholic Church. Interment with United States Army and El Paso Police Department Honors will follow at Fort Bliss National Cemetery. Serving as pallbearers are his grandsons Roger Jr., Jonathan, Marco, Ray IV, Reuben, Ryan, and Robert. Honorary pallbearers include his brothers Mike, Ricardo, Bernie, Tury and sons-in-law Roger and Willie, and great grandson Isaiah. Special thanks to Dr. Aloba, Dr. Amakiri, his compa Dr. Luz Candelaria; the staff at Del Sol Medical Center, especially nurses Joshua, Mayra, Eleanor; and Mt. Carmel Frs. Miguel, John, and Don. In lieu of flowers, please send donations to Mt. Carmel Catholic Church Parish Fund. We miss you so much already and will love you forever. Rest in peace Dad, until we see you again.
