Ricardo “Richie” Bustamante, age 50, of El Paso, Texas, passed away on September 11, 2026. His passing came far too soon and leaves an immeasurable emptiness in the hearts of those who loved him. His family finds comfort in knowing that Richie left this world peacefully and is now at rest in the presence of God.
Richie was a proud Sand Devil, Crusader, and Highlander who maintained lifelong friendships. To many, he was more than a friend—he was a “compadre,” the kind of person who became family and stayed family.
A talented contractor and craftsman, Richie had a natural gift for math, precise measurements, design, and problem-solving. Work and adventure took him to many places. He loved the open road and became the family’s unofficial “relocation specialist,” always willing to drive family or friends wherever they needed to go.
Richie lived life fully and with few regrets. He loved good food, cold beer, music, and being surrounded by the people he loved. He was spontaneous, adventurous, and always had a story to tell. He had a rich, beautiful voice that could give any mariachi singer a run for his money. His infectious laugh, warmth, tender heart, and humor will be sorely missed.
Above all and most importantly, Richie loved his family fiercely. His children and grandchildren held the most sacred place in his heart, as did his beloved Jessica, who shared his life, adventures, laughter, tears, and love. He was deeply devoted to his mother, Alicia, always worrying about and looking after her. No matter his age or how far his travels took him, he would always be her “Nene.” Joe was the big brother he always looked up to while Susie was the sister whose strength he admired.
Richie is survived by his sons, Brian A. Perales and Mark A. Perales; daughter, Julianne M. Bustamante; grandchildren, Noah Perales, Levi Perales, Liam Perales, Ryan Perales, Reya Perales, and Hugo Cadena; his mother, Alicia R. Bustamante; brother, José Gerardo Bustamante; sister, Susana Bustamante; and his beloved, Jessica Baez. He also leaves behind many extended family members, compadres, and lifelong friends who will forever carry his memory with them.
He was preceded in death by his father, José Bustamante, and his nephews, Fabian Alejandro Borja and Christopher J. Ruiz.
For those who loved Richie, fifty years simply was not enough. There should have been more time, but our Catholic faith reminds us that death is not the end of our story:
“In my Father’s house there are many dwelling places… I am going to prepare a place for you.” — John 14:2
Rest peacefully, Richie—our family, our friend, our compadre, and his mother’s beloved son.
