Ricardo was born on December 16, 1947, in Ysleta, Texas. He was the fourth of five children. He grew up in a modest home, working early to help support his family. He worked often in the cotton fields of the Lower Valley helping his mother and brothers. One of his vivid memories was his brothers throwing him in the cotton bag at the end of the day to "add weight" to their day's work. Richard was a graduate of Ysleta High School, UTEP-College of Engineering, and UT-Houston Dental Branch.
Richard was a kind and resourceful father, a grandfather, a skilled dentist, brother, uncle and philanthropist. He never forgot his humble beginnings growing up in Ysleta and often donated his time helping families in his community with dental care.
Ricardo is preceded in death by his parents, Juan Candelaria Marquez and Indalecia "Daisy" Marquez-Starr, his brothers Carlos Marquez Sr. and David Marquez, his nephews Ben Antonio Marquez, Cesar "Cheezer" Marquez, and Antonio "Tony" Meraz.
Richard is survived by his children, Marisa Marquez Martinez (Frank), Mirasol Marquez Ruiz (Carlos), and one grandchild Ricardo "Cal" Candelaria Martinez. He is also survived by his brother Jose Antonio Marquez, DDS, Ph.D. (Maria) and his sister Juanita Starr Sierra (Rafael). Uncle Richard will also be lovingly remembered by many nieces and nephews; Andrea Marquez Rudowicz (Mark), Jose Antonio Marquez Jr., Carlos Marquez Jr., Israel Marquez (Betty), Margarita Marquez, Yessika Marquez Zarazua (Victor), Crystal Marquez, Claudia Aguilera Trevizo (Rudy), Corina Marquez Burns, John David Marquez, Ph.D. (Ida), Dan Ricardo Marquez and all their children.
Funeral mass will be celebrated where Richard served as an altar boy in his youth at the Ysleta Mission-Old Chapel, 131 S. Zaragoza Rd., El Paso, Texas 79907 on Thursday, October 6, 2022, at 10am. Funeral services by Hillcrest Funeral Home 1060 N Carolina.
In place of flowers, Dr. Marquez would have encouraged memorial donations to the Ysleta Education Foundation. It was important to Richard for students from his alma mater Ysleta High School to be supported in seeking higher education. Donations can be made to www.yefscholarships.YISD.net
