Richard Rascon was born on November 12, 1931 in El Paso, Texas to parents Manuela Guzman and Elisandro Rascon. Born into a blended family he had 11 brothers and sisters. Richard worked as a mechanic during his early years before joining the US Air Force at the age of 20. He served in Korea between 1951 to 1953 during the Korean War. Upon receiving an Honorable Discharge in 1955, he returned to his home in El Paso and married his childhood sweetheart Olga Elena Fraire. Seeking better job opportunities, the newlyweds moved to Los Angeles California building their home in Pico Rivera. There Richard found a job working at Canon Electric working on electronic board assembly. Ultimately, he took a position working for the Los Angeles City Transit System. During this time, their family grew with the arrival of five boys (Anthony, Richard Jr. Arthur, Alexander, and Joseph). In 1967 Richard and his family moved back to El Paso, Texas to be close to family and the offerings of a slower-paced life. They purchased a newly built home on Jefferson St where they would raise their five boys and attended mass at Guadalupe Catholic Church. He worked in various jobs (milkman, managed a gas filling station and post office) before joining GECU as a maintenance man. Slowly each son departed for US Military Service, marriage, or college. In 1985 they were officially empty-nesters and they began traveling. In 1987 Richard retired from GECU and moved to Ruidoso Downs, New Mexico. There they built a new home and became parishioners at St Elinor Catholic Church under the stewardship of Father Al Galvan. Devoted Catholics they started a rosary group and met at members’ homes including their own. They built their retirement around their church group, family, and grandchildren visits. They travelled abroad visiting Lourdes France, Fatima, Madrid, Istanbul, Vatican City and Jerusalem. In 2013 they returned to El Paso to be closer to their sons, family, and friends. They purchased their current home in Northeast El Paso and established a new life while attending Holy Trinity Church. Life slowed but they remained devoted Catholics and received communion in their home. Richard went home on February 27, 2021 at 4:20am in his home with family. He lived a full and rich life, and his legacy will continue is his 5 children, 13 grandchildren and 4 great grandchildren. Richard believed in the dignity of a day’s work, the obligation to care for the less fortunate and sharing your talents with others. Rest in Peace Richard…. Son, Friend, Husband, and Father, Grandpa, Great Grandpa and Believer.
