In the early morning hours of September 30th, Rodolfo (Rudy) Vega fought his final battle against lung cancer and passed away quietly in his sleep at the age of 81. Although somewhat short in stature, Rudy was a “giant of a man” to his wife, children, family and friends.
He was preceded in death by his son Rudy “Mo” Junior and Vanessa Anick (grandchild).
Survived by: Amparo Alderete sister, Virginia his wife, Alonzo, son (Rosa), Linda, daughter-in-law, grandchildren: AJ (Kristin), Alex and Vinnie.
He just finished celebrating 64 years of marriage to Virginia, his childhood sweetheart. They met and fell in love at the old Morehead grade school. While at El Paso High, Rudy proposed to the love of his life. He and Virginia eloped and got married at the young age of 16.
During these early years, Rudy continued making deliveries on his Harley Davidson for Gunning Casteel Drugstore, while building his first duplex.
At the age of 18, Rudy, Virginia and Rudy Jr. moved into their first home on California Street. All at once, Rudy became a property owner, landlord and father.
In the coming years, he would build 2 other duplexes and one home. Along the way, Rudy established Rudy Vega and Sons Home Repair, a successful business that he ran with the help of his two sons.
Rudy will best be remembered for the day that he found thousands of dollars in a bag on the side of the freeway. He took the money home, counted it, and then returned every dollar to the rightful owner.
Rudy was also known as one of the best blackjack, pai-gow, three card poker and Texas Hold’em players to visit Las Vegas at any one time.
