Salomon (Sal) Rebe passed away on September 25, 2021. He was born in Havana, Cuba on May 27, 1936. His parents, fleeing the Russian civil war, emigrated from Lithuania to Cuba and then in 1942 to Providence, Rhode Island. He became a U.S. citizen and graduated from Hope High School in 1954, where he excelled at track. He won the Rhode Island State Track Championship in the 300 Meters. After graduating from the University of Rhode Island in 1958 with a BS in Agricultural Economics, he earned an officer commission in the U.S. Army. He served in combat from 1961-62 in the Vietnam War and achieved the rank of Captain. After 5 years in the Army, he was honorably discharged and attended law school at the University of Texas at Austin from 1964-1967. After receiving his Doctorate in Jurisprudence, he settled in El Paso, Texas, in 1968, and became a founding partner of Guevara, Rebe, Baumann, Coldwell, and Reedman Law Firm. Sal had a passion for helping people in legal trouble and did more than his share of work with little or no pay. He practiced law for 50 years and was recognized by the State Bar of Texas for his long years of legal service. During this period, he served as President of the local Sertoma International. He belonged to the University of Texas at El Paso Track and Field Association and was a track official for many years and was a regular at UTEP athletic events. He was a member of the El Paso Athletic Hall of Fame Committee and the Robert E. Chisholm Chapter of Vietnam Veterans of America. He was a talented violinist, coin collector, and loved attending horse races at Sunland Park Racetrack. Sal loved El Paso and considered it his hometown. Sal was also devoted to his family. He adored his wife and took enormous pride in his kids’ accomplishments, and never missed a game, recital, or graduation. He was their biggest fan.
