

Stewart was preceded in death by his wife of 47 years, Hildegard (Gundlach) Hiney, as well as his brother, John Hiney, his sisters, Hilda Sheilds and Joan Confer, and his twin brother, Godfrey. He is survived by his two daughters, Maria Pace of El Paso and Joanne Ginther of Bryant, Arkansas, and four granddaughters, Heather Pace, Lindsey Pace, Lauren (Pace) Perez and Jaydn Ginther. Stewart was born in Aldershot, Southampton England, on February 14, 1936, to James Bernard Hiney and Doris May (Shaw) Hiney. He joined the British Army at age 19, and his service took him to what was then West Germany, where he met and married the love of his life, Hildegard. They were married on October 3, 1961, in Neinburg-Weser, Germany. In 1973, Stewart and Hildegard moved to El Paso with their daughters to begin a new life together. He was a kind and generous father dedicated to his children, and taught them how to live and love by example, showing them the importance of dedication, volunteerism, kindheartedness, and humor. Stewart worked as a machinist at El Paso Natural Gas for over 25 years until he retired to care for his ailing wife. Though he loved England and maintained his citizenship in the UK, he loved the United States and enjoyed living in El Paso. In 1976, along with his brother-in-law, Stewart founded the first-ever ladies’ soccer league in El Paso. He began coaching a team of young ladies in Northeast El Paso, and continued to do so for the next 36 years. Eventually, both daughters and three granddaughters played for him. He also coached co-ed and boys’ teams in the AYSO, played on men’s teams, officiated in multiple leagues, and could often be found chalking fields early on Saturday and Sunday mornings. “Coach Hiney” will be lovingly remembered by the hundreds of women and men that played for him at one time or another.In addition to soccer, Stewart enjoyed fishing, golf, bowling, tennis, playing cards, and watching most sports. He was a natural athlete, having participated in rugby, cross-country running and high jump, and basketball in his youth. He was a fan of West Bromwich Albion in the English Premier League, the Dallas Cowboys, UTEP sports and Andress High School.
