Tomas Ruben Huerta, Sr March 7, 1930 - May 10, 2018
Tomas (Binson) Huerta, Sr. peacefully entered God’s loving arms on Thursday morning at the age of 88. Tomas was born on March 7,1930 to Juan and Paula Huerta in El Paso, TX. Proud of growing up in El Paso’s “segundo barrio”, Tomas first attended Aoy elementary, then La Bowie High. Being athletically gifted, Mr. Huerta was then recruited to play basketball and football at Cathedral High School. He graciously accepted and graduated from there in 1950. While attending La Bowie, it was there he met the love of his life and future wife, Antonieta “Toni” Vijil. After a six year courtship, they married in May of 1952. After graduation, Binson was offered a college scholarship to play basketball but felt serving his country took precedence. In 1951, he entered the Air Force. After basic training, he was stationed in Tokyo, Japan. After an honorable discharge in 1955, Ruben entered civilian life once again. While employed by El Paso City Lines, he was a proud member of Transportation Workers Union Local 1256, and a part of their fast-pitch softball team. In 1990, after many years working for civil service at Ft. Bliss, Ruben retired. Over his lifetime, he was a member of many great organizations. Some which included The Golden Bears Club, Bel Air Highland Booster Club, Los Que Van Quedando from Cathedral, and the Segura McDonald VFW. He was a long time faithful member of San Antonio de Padua Catholic Church. He served as an usher, was a catechist, and helped count money after services for many years. Through his many accomplishments, nothing brought Ruben greater joy than his family. Left to cherish his memory is his loving wife of 66 years, Toni, and their loving children Ruben Jr. (Connie), Fernando Sr. (La Lonie), Norma, and Reynaldo. He was blessed to have 13 grandchildren, Melissa, Tomas III, Melinda, Marine MGySgt Fernando Jr., Christine, Leaha, Lisha, Kenneth, Louis Jr., Dylan, Ashley, Michelle, and Miah. Loved by his 18 great-grandchildren Raylene, Ailene, Dante, Dominic, Kyrsten, Hunter, Kaleb, Izrael, Haley, Samantha, Ileanna, Ashton, Lilly, Breaha, Baylee, Brooklyn, August, and Otto. Also many nieces and nephews, and his ever faithful companion dog, Henry.
