Bertha M. Ortiz

Bertha M. Ortiz, age 65, of Austin, Texas, passed away on July 19, 2026, after a courageous year-long battle with cancer. She was surrounded by love in her final moments, with her devoted husband by her side. Bertha, known to many as Nena, was born in Austin, Texas on November 12, 1960, to Wenceslao Sr. and Estella Matias where she spent her life in the city she called home.

For 47 years, Bertha shared her life with her husband, Gilbert Ortiz, in a marriage defined by enduring love and a bond that stood as one of the great joys of her life.

Above all, Nena was the heartbeat of her family — a devoted mother and a constant source of strength for those around her. She gave fully of herself, asking little in return, and everyone who knew her felt the depth of her care in countless ways. Her family will forever cherish her laugh, her warmth, and the closeness she shared with her children. She found joy in the simple, meaningful things: cooking for the people she loved, tending to her plants, and always seeking to create the best moments for her family.

Bertha is preceded in death by her parents Wenceslao R. Matias Sr, Estella Matias, and brother Wenceslao R. Matias Jr

She is survived by her husband, Gilbert Ortiz; her children, Ricky, Estella, Gilbert (Papito)Jr., Steven, and Eric; her grandchildren, Miquela, Alina, Eloisa, Alyssa, Gisella, Laila, Ivelisse, and Lynneli; her great grandchild Isabella; her siblings, Robert Matias, Gloria Matias, and Wenceslao (Benny) R. Matias Jr.

A visitation will be held on August 9, 2026, at 1:00 p.m., followed by a service at 2:00 p.m., at Providence-Jones Family Funeral Home, 604 State Hwy 95, Elgin, TX 78621.

Bertha "Nena" Ortiz will be deeply missed and forever cherished by her family and all who loved her.
