Rosendo "Roy" Vargas Molina, a decorated war hero, historic professional trailblazer, and deeply devoted family man, entered into eternal rest on June 13, 2026, in Austin, Texas, surrounded by the love of his family. He was 77 years old.
Born on June 1, 1949, in Big Spring, Texas, Roy was the youngest of three children born to the late Guadalupe R. Molina and Ninfa Vargas.
A man of immense courage, Roy served valiantly as a forward observer for two tours in the Vietnam War. He was a hero in every sense of the word. For his bravery and dedication, he was awarded his first Bronze Star for heroism in ground combat on February 18, 1970, and a second Bronze Star for meritorious achievement in ground operations against hostile forces in May 1970. He also received the Army Commendation Medal for meritorious service in the Republic of Vietnam from April 1969 to September 1970, alongside numerous other certificates of appreciation and achievement.
Upon his honorable return from the war, Roy dedicated his life to his faith, his career, and above all, his family. He married the love of his life, San Juanita "Janie" Molina, with whom he shared 51 beautiful years of marriage. Together, they built a life rooted in love and devotion, raising three children. Roy was an unwavering presence in his children’s lives; he deeply supported their academic pursuits and was a constant, proud fixture in the stands at every single sports game, cheering them on.
Professionally, Roy was a historic pioneer. He was the first Hispanic individual to become a Texas Licensed State Land Surveyor (LSLS), and was dual-credentialed as a Registered Professional Land Surveyor (RPLS). Over a successful 28-year career, he immensely enjoyed his profession, his colleagues, and the employees he mentored. He retired in 2003 as the Assistant Director of the Land Surveying Division of the Texas General Land Office.
Roy was an active and faithful servant in his church home for most of his life, serving dedicatedly until his health no longer permitted him to attend.
Known for his contagious smile, quick wit, and love of a good joke, Roy brought joy to everyone around him. He was an avid outdoorsman who loved to fish and took every opportunity to cast a line—especially with the prized surf rod presented to him at his retirement. Camping was another favorite pleasure, leading his family on countless adventures across the great state of Texas. Later in life, Roy was blessed to welcome four grandchildren, stepping into the role of a deeply loving grandpa.
Roy was preceded in death by his father, Guadalupe R. Molina, and his mother, Ninfa Vargas.
His legacy of love, honor, and humor lives on through his beloved wife, San Juanita Molina; his three children, Patricia Molina, Stephanie Love (and her husband, Hunter), and Lionel Molina (and his wife, Brittney); and his four cherished grandchildren, Victoria Medina, Noah Plant, Adam Plant, and Eberly Molina. He is also survived by his brothers, aunts, uncles, cousins, and a host of extended family and dear friends.
Though he is no longer with us, his love, guidance, and legacy will remain forever in the hearts of all who had the privilege of knowing him.
