

Beloved mother, Shirlene Avanelle Matetzschk, passed away on April 15, 2026, in Coupland, Texas. She was born to Lambert and Edith Peterson in Bastrop County, Texas, on February 2, 1937. She was baptized May 9, 1938, at the Brethren Church of Granger and was confirmed November 18, 1951, at St. Peter’s Evangelical Lutheran Church of Elgin. On March 6, 1954, she married the love of her life, Glen Matetzschk, and were married for 59 years.
Shirlene was a loving and devoted mother who inspired her children to be the kind, respectful, and loving adults they are today. Her six children, 19 grandchildren, and 26 great-grandchildren are her legacy. They will remember her as they take those gifts and use them to make the world a better place.
Over the years, Shirlene enjoyed quilting, sewing, painting, crafts, cooking and baking. She enjoyed playing the piano and organ for church services and sang in the church choir. She was a Girl Scout Leader when her daughters were young. Anytime that a special occasion dress was needed she rose to the occasion, even sewing the bridesmaids’ dresses for many of her daughters' weddings. Shirlene also had a “green thumb” and could make anything grow. Later in life she enjoyed playing dominos and Farkle with her children, grandchildren and great grandchildren.
Shirlene was a member of SPJST Lodge #18 in Elgin, holding the position of Secretary for many years.
She is survived by her children Dianna Laubenberg and her husband William of Elgin, Texas; Glenn Matetzschk and his wife Renee of Tomball, Texas; Sheryl Burgess and her husband Paul of Lyndonville, New York; Melinda Mican and her husband Richard of Rosenberg, Texas; Melissa Treesh and her husband Erik of Gillette, Wyoming; and Melanie Burgess and her husband Patrick of Brenham, Texas.
Her grandchildren are Amy Laubenberg, Mary McRae and her husband Dan, Wendy Laubenberg, Matthew Matetzschk and his fiance Kalika, Rachel Banuelos and her husband Isaac, Ryan Burgess and his wife Melissa, Rayne Stevens and her husband Patrick, Ross Burgess, Rebeka Houseman and her husband Josh, Rhiannon Martin and her husband Ben, Richard Mican and his wife Emily, Dalton Mican and his wife Katie, Timothy Mican, Brandon Treesh, Addison Hladky and her husband Trey, Cassidy Treesh, Clarissa Burgess, Alyssa Muehlbrad and her husband Chase, and Jacob Burgess.
Her great-grandchildren, Thomas, Abigail, and Isabelle McRae, Nathaniel Leonard, Lexi and Joseph Banuelos, Landon, Logan, and Lydia Houseman, Caleb, Iyla, and Arwen Martin, Kylee, Noah and Elias Stevens, Penelope Mican, Freya Mican, Cooper and Wesley Mican, Maverick and Kai Hladky, Aubrey Burgess, Benjamin and Oliver Muehlbrad, and Gabriel and Elleanor Mejia.
Shirlene will be greatly missed by her sisters-in-law, Marjorie Matetzschk and Fay Jordan, brother-in-law Clyde Farris; along with multiple nieces and nephews.
Shirlene was preceded in death by her loving husband, Glen; parents, Lambert and Edith Peterson; brothers, Donald, Paul, and Gary Peterson; and her grandson, Shawn Burgess; and honorary sister, Jeanette Peterson.
Services will be held on Friday, April 24, 2026, at 10 am at St. John’s Evangelical Lutheran Church of the Richland Community, 17701 Cameron Rd. Pflugerville, Texas, with interment at the church’s cemetery. Visitation will be on Thursday, April 23, 2026, at Providence-Jones Funeral Home in Elgin, Texas, from 6pm to 8 pm.
