Tom graduated from A C Jones High School in 1973. He earned an Associates Degree in Science from Bee County College in 1979. He joined the US Navy and served as a Cryptologic Tech/Radioman, Morse code operator and communications security monitor from 1973 to 1977 and received an Honorable Discharge after proudly serving his country. He worked for the US Navy Dept from 1977 to 1980. He joined the US Postal Service in 1980 as a letter carrier and was promoted to Supervisor and Operations Support Specialist and later Postmaster of Cedar Creek Texas and retired from the USPS in 2005. After that he worked for Ace Hardware and the City of Elgin Parks and Recreation Dept. And in 2008 he worked for Bastrop County Development Services Department as a GIS Technician and Mapping Specialist until he retired in 2018. Tom made many cherished friends in all of these workplaces and made many wonderful memories.
During his time stationed in the Philippines, he was an avid cyclist. He loved fishing with his brother in law Joel and his best friends Leonard and Fernando. In football season he loved going to Benji's, his nephew's home, to drink some beer and watch the games and boxing with him and his family. Later on he and his wife Rachel and grandkids spent a lot of time fishing on Lake Bastrop and in their neighbor's ponds. He loved going to his grandchildren's football, baseball etc. games. Tom always wanted to live in the country and that is where he spent the last 24 years of his life, in the country with his wife sitting on the porch watching the birds and squirrels fight over the feed in the feeders he had made, long walks and driving into down to eat at their favorite Mexican food place El Magueys. He even helped deliver a calf one time for our friend and neighbor Nancy. He named the calf Norman. That was a proud moment for him. He loved picking agarita berries, dew berries and wild plums when they were in season. And music, Tom loved music, all kinds of music. His son Brandon, made him a flash drive he treasured and listened to all the time. He and Brandon had a lot in common when it came to music. He love watching tv, especially old westerns. He was a very simple man and deeply loved his son, step children, grandchildren and great grandchildren. And Tom was funny. He made people laugh.
Tom is survived by his wife Rachel of 24 years, his son Brandon Wilson and husband Aaron Grant, Step children Sarah Timming and husband Justin, Jacob Helgren, Matthew Tabor and wife Rebecca, Adam Tabor, Jonathan Tabor and wife Kimberly, his nephew Benjamin Wilson and wife Corrina. He is also survived by his grandchildren, Kevin Helgren and husband Ben Chou, Victoria Stalberger and husband Justin, Caitlyn Bancroft and husband Granger, Levi Timming and fiancée Taylor Casey, Ashlyn Tabor and fiancée Gavin Liddell, Conrad Pace, Elizabeth Justice and husband Tyler, Lorelei Tabor, Aiva Pace and Luke Goertz, Aubrey Tabor and Mason Scaife, Laney Tabor, Tenley Tabor, seven great grandchildren, Everest, Harper, Ender, Hazel, Paisley, River and Eerie, mother in law Jo Ann Machen, brothers in law Joey Smith, Alan Smith and wife Crystal, sister in law Meri Matl, numerous beloved nieces and nephews, and his best friends Ann and Leonard Falcon and Ricky and Janet Terrell, and dear to his heart Matthew Pace and Sylvia Diaz.
He is preceded in death by his stepdaughter Leah Pace, his brother Ben Wilson, mother Mickey Wilson Casarez, stepfather Roy Casarez, father Benjamin Wilson, father in law Billy Machen and best friend Fernando Coffeen and all the many animals he and his wife rescued and loved over the years.
Tom faced his cancer with courage and fought hard for almost five years. There is comfort in knowing that Tom's final days were spent in the place that had brought him so much happiness—the home where he and Rachel had built their life together. He will be deeply missed, forever loved, and carried in the hearts of those who were blessed to share his life.
