Jean C. Warf

cats and grand-daughter next to her. She was born in Jefferson Co. KY, on April 21, 1925, exactly one

year before the Queen of England, a fact that gave her great pleasure. She was preceded in death by her

father Herman D. Cain, her mother Sally T. Cain, her daughter Deborah J. Meier, her son Phillip R. Warf,

her brother Herman D. “Buddy” Cain and her sisters Gloria K. Ray and Betty L. Joy.

Jean completed high school and went onto professional school where she learned shorthand and typing.

She enjoyed a long career with the Civil Service at Fort Knox where she worked until her retirement.

Jean lived most of her life in Elizabethtown, Kentucky where she raised her children and was an active

member of Severns Valley Baptist Church and later Elizabethtown Baptist Church.

Jean was a passionate reader and loved to travel. Her love for books called her to volunteer at the

Elizabethtown Public Library. She would frequently travel with family to Florida and later made her way

to the United Kingdom where she kissed the Blarney Stone, Israel where she saw the tomb of Jesus and

Egypt where she rode a camel.

Jean was an indomitable woman of singular character. She was a feminist before feminism existed

insisting on her equitable right to own a home and get a mortgage as a woman, raise children as a single

mother and work 35 years in a career where she was told she “couldn’t” do the work because it was a

“man’s job”. She never saw these things as extraordinary, she was just doing what was right and what

needed to be done. Jean lived a life of compassion and grace but did not suffer fools. She had a biting

wit and brilliant mind that contained the history of the world as well as that of her own life. She also

sang a mean version of “The Old Grey Mare” and “Show Me the Way to Go Home”.

Jean is fiercely loved and is survived by her granddaughter, Lesley Meier (Tim Barrett), Indianapolis, IN,

her grandson, Alex Meier (April Lucas), New Lebanon, OH, her great-grandchildren Saffron Shore and

Baxter Shore as well as nieces and nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews and dear friends.

A graveside service will be held at Elizabethtown Memorial Gardens at 2pm on Monday, October 9th ,

2017. Services are being handled by Brown Funeral Home. Donations in her memory may be made to

Community Health Network Hospice of Indianapolis. Her family will host a memorial and story sharing

celebrating her life on Sunday, December 3 rd from 2-4pm at Healing Arts Indy in Indianapolis, IN.
