Melford “Mel” Taylor Irwin, 78, of Elizabethtown, Kentucky, passed away on September 3 at Baptist Health Hardin. Mel was born on September 9, 1947, in Glendale to Harry and Jane Irwin, and spent much of his childhood on his family’s farm there, even while being raised in Elizabethtown. He graduated from Elizabethtown High School in 1965, carrying with him the work ethic and small town steadiness that shaped his life.
Throughout his life, Mel served his community in several roles. He worked as a firefighter, a realtor, and a magistrate, and for the Kentucky State Division of Water Safety in water patrol. He also served on the Board of Directors at Hardin Memorial Hospital. Mel was a long time member of Glendale Christian Church. He loved spending countless hours outdoors fishing and golfing.
He was the loving husband of Linda Patterson Irwin for 59 years. Mel was the father of Gregory (Cathy) Irwin of Winston Salem, North Carolina and Mitch (Michelle) Irwin of Glendale.
He was known as Pap to his grandchildren — Jay, Mason, Caleb, and Bristol — and a bonus grandfather to Drew, Nolan, and Marleigh Goodman.
Mel is survived by his siblings: Harry “Toody” Irwin of Metcalfe County, Kentucky, and Dorothy McGuffin (Hobert) of Elizabethtown. He is also survived by his sister in law Barbara Clark and his nephew Jason Irwin, along with several cousins and extended family.
A celebration of life will be held on Friday September 18th, 2026 from 4:00-8:00pm at The Historic State Theater 209 W Dixie Ave, Elizabethtown, KY.
