Nora Sweat

She was a devoted daughter, wife, mother, sister, aunt, educator, friend, volunteer, and parishioner of St. James Catholic Church in Elizabethtown.

Preceded in death by her parents, Joseph and Juanita (Boarman) Vaillancourt; her sister, Mary Josephine Vaillancourt; her husband, Michael Francis Sweat; and sisters-in-law, Sharon Sweat and Mary Catherine O’Malley.

Nora is survived by her son, Joseph William Sweat; her sister, Carolyn Weinert; her grandchildren, Shyanne and Nolan; her nephew, Chris; her nieces, Maureen, Kelly, Casey, and Leslie; many great-nephews and great-nieces; and numerous beloved cousins, students, colleagues, and friends.

Nora earned her Bachelor's and Master's degrees from Western Kentucky University, where she studied Home Economics and Child Care Services. She was a proud member of the Delta Kappa Gamma sorority and served as president of the Mu chapter. She began her teaching career at West Hardin High School, where she met the love of her life, Michael Francis Sweat. Their partnership spanned 52 amazing years, and together they built a life of warmth, purpose, and dedication to their community. In 1982, their hearts were full of joy and blessings as they welcomed their beloved son, Joseph.

Nora later taught at Central Hardin High School from 1991 until her retirement in 2000. Over her 30-year teaching career, she left an indelible mark on the community through the home economics lessons she taught and the recipes she shared. Nora was always happiest cooking for those she loved and sharing her culinary passion with her students. In 2010, she poured that passion into writing a book, Mama and Me, inspired by recipes she loved cooking with her mother.

After retiring from teaching, Nora worked as the Secretary to the Director of the Hardin County Schools Performing Arts Center. She also enjoyed writing a part-time column, "Dash of Class," for the News-Enterprise of Elizabethtown, sharing recipes and culinary tips.

Nora was a friend to all and prided herself on maintaining relationships with former students and friends through book signings and Facebook. She will always be remembered for her cooking, homemaking, and deep love for her family, friends, and students.

Visitation will take place on Friday, August 28th, from 10:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. at St. James Catholic Church. A funeral service will follow at 11:00 a.m., with burial at St. James Cemetery immediately following.
