Rosalie M. Morrison

The world lost a remarkable woman and mother on May 10, 2014, just before Mother’s Day, Rosalie Mae Ames Munro Morrison, 101, of Williamsburg, passed away peacefully after a long active life. She was born August 18, 1912 in Traverse City to John Stephan and Rosemond (Burley) Ames.

She had one younger sister, Marion, who preceded her in death. She married Lowell Eugene Munro on December 2, 1939 but they had to keep it secret because she would have not been allowed to keep her job as a married woman.They had three children, John Scott, Jean Marie, and Phyllis Ann. In 1942, after the birth of Scott, they moved to the cherry farm on Elk Lake Rd. where she lived the next 71 years of her life, until moving to Hope Village in January of this year. In addition to running a cherry farm and cherry buying station, she taught elementary school for many years. She played golf until she was 90, was an avid (and very good) bridge player, and enjoyed gardening and preserving her produce up to her 100th year. Her applesauce and bread and butter pickles were great favorites with her family.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Lowell in 1958. In 1966, she married Robert Morrison and they farmed together for sixteen years until his death in 1982. They enjoyed going to Arizona for the winter and she continued to go there until 2006, when she decided the travel was too difficult at the age of 94! She has a close relationship with her stepdaughter Nancy (Ken) McDaniels and visited her often in California. Rosalie was a longtime member of Eastern Star of Elk Rapids and a 50 year member of the Congregational Church in Traverse City.

She is survived by her son Scott (Sandy) Munro and daughters Jean (Larry, deceased) Rohrschneider, and Phyllis (Michael) Wells, and grandchildren Kirsten, Gabriel (Branka), Reuben, Monica and Philip (Corinna), and seven great grandchildren.

Rosalie’s funeral will be held Thursday, May 15, 2014 at 1pm at Covell Funeral Home in Elk Rapids, with visitation on Wednesday, May 14, 2014 from 5 to 8pm. Burial will follow the service on Thursday at Maple Grove Cemetery in Elk Rapids. Memorial contributions may be directed to Disabled Veterans or Munson Hospice.
