Carl Robert (“Bob”) Schlaich passed away peacefully at the Upper Chesapeake Medical Center on June 23, 2026 at the age of 92. Bob was the son of Carl Russell Schlaich and Anna E. (Wheeler) Schlaich. He is survived by two brothers, Donald Schlaich and wife Barbara, and Bruce Schlaich and wife Bonnie. He was preceded in death by his beloved sister, Carol Ann Schlaich Rothenberger.
Bob grew up in Arbutus, Maryland, where he graduated from Catonsville High School in 1952. At Catonsville, Bob was a proud member of the 1952 championship lacrosse team. After high school he attended the University of Maryland, but left to go to work full-time. Although he left the university early, Bob appreciated the value of an education, earning a diploma in traffic management from LaSalle Extension University in 1968 and an Associate of Arts degree from Thomas Edison College in 1978.
In June 1955, Bob married his high school sweetheart Betty Marie (Mihm) Schlaich. Betty preceded him in death in 2020. They were married for 65 years. Bob and Betty were the parents of two sons - Carl Ridgeley Schlaich and wife Helen of Havre de Grace, Maryland, and Andrew Russell Schlaich and wife Melissa, of Berlin, Maryland. A third son, Barry Mihm Schlaich, passed away in 1966 at the age of 5-1/2. The family called Catonsville home for 44 years. Bob and Betty “retired” to Ellicott City in 2010. Upon Betty’s passing, Bob moved to Havre de Grace, Maryland to live with his son and daughter-in-law.
Bob’s first full-time job was at Montgomery Ward’s in Baltimore. Over the course of his lifetime Bob worked full-time for 13 different Baltimore area companies. During an 18 year term at Doxsee Food Corporation, he was promoted to Vice-President of Distribution. He finished his career after 10 years at Peak Technologies, retiring at the age of 72. He was a former member of the Traffic Club of Baltimore and a former member of the Delta Nu Alpha Traffic Fraternity, where he served as President in 1963.
Bob was broken-hearted when his beloved Colts left town; however, the Ravens grew on him, and he watched their games without fail. After retiring he became an ardent fan of the Baltimore Orioles. Together Bob and Betty loved traveling to Cape May, New Jersey and Williamsburg, Virginia, and made many trips to both.
