The late Donald Crosby Timmons was born on November 25,1934 in Brooksville, Florida to Margarite Scott and Jonathan Timmons. At a very young age, Donald, affectionately called “Don” moved with his mother and an older sister, Jacqueline Stuart, to New York City. His mother would later marry Clarence Benners, affectionately known as “Popi” who Don would develop a close relationship.
Donald Timmons was educated in the New York City Public School System. After graduating from high school, he served for three years in the United States Army receiving an honorable discharge in 1961.
In July of 1961 Don attended the wedding of his cousin where he would meet Gwendolyn E. Reid. The two were united in holy matrimony on November 25, 1961. From this union came two children, Donald A. Timmons and Allison T. Timmons. Gwendolyn preceded him in death.
Don was employed by Kollsman Electronics for several years and then went to work for The Department of Environmental Protection until his retirement in 1996. In his spare time he coached basketball for the neighborhood church league, and would at one point be named Coach of the Year. Don enjoyed participating in, and watching sporting events, but his true love was photography. Don could be counted on to have a camera ready at all times to capture special moments with family and friends. In 2006 Don relocated to Maryland to be closer to his family who had also relocated.
Don is best remembered for his kind-heartedness and his easygoing personality. At a moments notice, he was ready and known to lend a helping hand to friends, family, as well as extended family. He was a father-figure to many who affectionately referred to him as “dad” or “pop.”
Don leaves to mourn his passing: children, Donald A. Timmons of New Jersey, and Allison T. Timmons of Maryland; granddaughters, Aniesa A. Timmons, and Bria N. Timmons of Maryland; sister-in-law, O. Josephine Cruse of Maryland; nephews and nieces, Robert Stuart of Texas, David Stuart of California, Pamela Rivers of New York, Cecilia Cruse-Talley, and Camille Cruse-Marshall of Maryland and their respective families; a daughter-in-law, Iris Bonilla; his surrogate children; and a host of family and friends.
Don is preceded in death by his siblings: Jacqueline Stuart, Iretha Timmons, and Jonathan Timmons.
