Francis Adebayo Munis (“Bayo”) was born on January 31, 1940, in Zaria, Kaduna State in Nigeria to Francisco Olatunde & Veronica Aduke Munis. He was the first of four brothers. His father worked for the Government in the Federal Pathology Department in Zaria and in Lagos. His mother was a well-renowned Educationist in Lagos. Bayo attended Holy Cross Primary School and St. Gregory’s College both in Lagos. He worked briefly at the Federal Audit Department before traveling to the United Kingdom where he studied and became a Chartered Accountant. Bayo married his sweetheart Caroline Taiwo Kuku in Manchester, UK in December 1964. The marriage is blessed with five children – Funlayo, Tosin, Lamide (D), Babasola, Gbemisola, and six grandchildren.
As a professional, Bayo was the epitome of integrity, hard work, commitment, and reliability, lessons he picked up from his mother. He returned to Nigeria in May 1970 to join the Lagos City Council in the Treasury Department. In 1975, he became the Chief Accountant of Lagos City Transport Corporation. In 1979 he became deputy Accountant General of Lagos State and in 1981 was became the Accountant General of Lagos State. He retired from the service of Lagos State in 1984. After retirement, Bayo started his private accounting and consulting practice providing services to private, government, and international clients.
Bayo was a very private and reserved person. Many have used words such as “gentle” to describe him. He was raised in the Catholic tradition of faith and in 1987 his older children led him to true faith in the Lord Jesus Christ. His Christian faith and beliefs guided his life since that day. Together with his wife, Bayo was a very active member of the Four-Square Gospel Church in Lagos where he was an Elder. He was a wonderful father to all his children and encouraged them to become their best.
Finally, it is impossible to fully describe Bayo’s life without citing his strong and loving relationship with his wife, Taiwo. They would have celebrated their 58th wedding anniversary this December. Throughout all this time – easily most of their lives – Bayo and Taiwo lived, journeyed, and evolved together; they were partners in every sense of the word. Their strong devotion not just to one another, but to their families and to their Christian communities shaped and strengthened their own path together in life and improved immeasurably the lives of so many others.
