Gwennola (Gwen) Anna Brewster, born in Albany, NY on April 26, 1945, died peacefully with family on September 17, 2023. In the last two years, she overcame many health obstacles and proved she was a strong fighter.
Gwen grew up in Schodack Landing, NY. She attended the State University of New York College at Potsdam in Potsdam, NY and graduated in 1967 with a bachelor’s degree in Elementary Education. Gwen settled with her family in Crofton, MD in 1975 where her children, Leah and Christopher, grew up. Gwen spent many years as a stay-at-home mom and eventually went on to earn her master’s degree plus an additional 30 credit hours in Education from the University of Maryland in 1999. She spent the majority of her 30+ year teaching career as a middle school Science teacher. She loved the awkward middle school years, loved her students fiercely and loved science. After she retired, she spent much of her time with her grandkids.
Gwen was an incredibly talented knitter. She has created hundreds of beautiful blankets, sweaters, hats and scarves and has also donated items to groups providing items for newborn babies. Gwen loved to be outdoors in her gardens and in her younger days grew beautiful flowers and a variety of vegetables. She also loved to bake, especially all the sweet treats.
Gwen loved her kids and grandkids and was a very large presence in their lives. She loved to babysit when the grandkids were small and was the first to join in on their imagination. She was also very opinionated and loved a healthy debate. In recent months, she enjoyed monthly brunches with her daughter and son.
Gwen was preceded in death by her sister Laura, grandson Anthony, and brother DeWitt. She is survived by daughter Leah (Emmett), son Christopher (Amy), grandkids Will, Benjamin, Angelo, Amato, Joselin, and sister Gloria.
Gwen wished to be cremated and her immediate family will spread her ashes in a private ceremony.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Charlestown Benevolent Care Fund which provides living assistance at Charlestown Senior Living Community to those in need of care.
