The family of Joan Ann Drexler is deeply saddened to announce her passing on Tuesday, May 27, 2025, at the age of 86.
Affectionately known as “Ma!” to her children, “Joni” to her countless friends, and “Nanny” to her beloved grandchildren and great-grandchildren, Joan was born and raised in Baltimore, Maryland, where she spent her entire life.
Joan had a zest for life and a love for travel—whether traveling abroad to places like Italy and Cancun, making quick getaways to Atlantic City, or enjoying a local parish bingo night. She had a soft spot for dogs, a passion for dancing, and a joy for celebrating holidays with her family. She delighted in board games, decorated for every holiday, and approached shopping with gusto. She enjoyed festivals (especially Italian ones), indulging in robust meals (especially sweets of all kinds), reconnecting with old friends, and took great pride in her independent living.
Joan proudly served 50 years with the Maryland Department of Health & Mental Hygiene. After retiring, she joined the Red Hat Society—partying more than she might’ve admitted—and spent treasured months at a time with her son and family during the summers and Christmastime. Above all, she cherished her family and cherished her lifelong friends.
Though our hearts ache in her absence, we take comfort in knowing she is at peace with her Lord, reunited with her beloved child Eddie, her sister Tina, her “best friend” and mother Flossie, and her father Leonard.
Family and friends are invited to pay their respects on Monday, June 2, 2025, beginning at 11:00 AM at the Gary L. Kaufman Funeral Home, 7250 Washington Blvd, Elkridge, MD 21075. A Catholic Funeral Prayer Service will begin at 12:00 PM. Interment will follow at Gardens of Faith Memorial Gardens, 5598 Trumps Mill Rd, Baltimore, MD 21206.
