Joaquin was born on May 10, 1944 in San Salvador, El Salvador to the late Juan and Maria Lopez. He received his advanced education through the United States Army and at Baltimore City Community College. For the majority of his time in the El Salvadorian Army and the United States Army he worked in the medical field. He retired from the United States Army after 15 years and he worked an additional 22 years at the United States Postal Service until he retired in 2016.
On August 22, 1975, he married the love of his life, Lidia A. Martinez. Together they have three children, Zoila, Joaquin, Jr. and Julio and many grandchildren.
Joaquin had a passion for helping others. Before he married Lidia, he was a recovered Alcoholic and he made it his life’s work to help others with the same vice. He helped establish Alcoholic Anonymous groups in the Eastern Regional Area of the United States for the Spanish Community. And when those turned to searching for God, he would guide them to the local congregation of Jehovah’s Witnesses.
Though he was not a Jehovah’s Witness, you would see him with Lidia at the congregation meetings, assemblies and conventions. And for those who remember, when the conventions were held in New York, the family loved to camp and Joaquin would help all the friends there with them to set up camp like modern Israelites.
Joaquin loved to paint and work on anything. He was a true jack of all trades. He was known for his commanding presence and, if you caught it, a warm smile and contagious laugh. He was known to take care of anyone that needed it, family or not. Many family and friends have seen how he would have an open-door policy and if needed, a bed to sleep in. Joaquin never judged you for your mistakes and never left anyone wanting when they needed a hand. He will always be remembered as a loving husband, father, uncle, brother, and friend.
Joaquin was preceded in death by his mother, Maria, his father, Juan, and several siblings. He is survived by his wife Lidia, his three children, Zoila, Joaquin Jr., and Julio, his grandchildren, his brother and sisters, several nieces and nephews, and extended family.
The viewing, funeral service, and burial will be held on Friday, March 5th, 2021, at the Gary L. Kaufman Funeral Home at Meadowridge Memorial Park starting at 9:30am and completing with the military funeral honors at 2:30pm. The service talk will begin at 1:30 and will be given in Spanish only. The funeral will be on Zoom and Facebook Stream. For details, please see the Facebook page at this link- https://www.facebook.com/In-Memory-of-Joaquin-Lopez-Sr-107221008089168.
