Matilda Adeline Martial, affectionately known as "Mattie," was promoted to glory on September 23, 2026, in Severn, Maryland, at the age of 85. She was born on July 13, 1941, in La Bagatelle, Leguan, Guyana, South America to the late Joannes Newton Martial (1999) and Doris Elena Martial (2014).
Mattie's working life took her across several countries and many roles. In Guyana, she taught mathematics and later served in Guyana National Service. She moved to St. Lucia in 1983 and to Canada in 1984, before making her permanent home in the United States later that year. In Maryland, she worked as a live-in nanny for the Bieber family and as a day care teacher at Kids Stop. In 1998, she relocated to Las Vegas, Nevada, where she worked as a general laborer with LIUNA Local 872 until her retirement in 2007.
Faith and service were at the heart of Mattie's life. After moving from Las Vegas to New York, she became a faithful member of St. Marks Anglican Church and a proud member of the Order of the Daughters of the King, St. Marks Chapter #3096. After settling in Maryland, she continued her membership as a Daughter-at-Large. Mattie believed deeply in giving back, and she generously supported Shriners Children's and St. Jude Children's Research Hospital.
Mattie was an avid sports fan, with a special devotion to the New York Giants. She also enjoyed cooking, baking, gardening, playing dominoes, spending time with family and friends, an occasional friendly wager on the games and visiting the casino.
Mattie was the mother of five children: Mark Martial, Dexter Martial (Petal), Reagan Martial (Vernita), Yanis Martial Powell (Sean), and Lucien Martial. Her firstborn son, Mark, preceded her in death in 2023. She leaves to cherish her memory her sons Dexter, Reagan, Lucien and her daughter, Yanis; eleven grandchildren – Nathifa Charles, Nigel Martial, Séance Powell-Woodring (Kyle), Porsha Martial-Bowman (John), Ashley Martial, Alexis Martial, Sean Nicole Powell, Destiny Martial, Ziona Martial, Joshua Martial, and Brandy Martial; and five great-grandchildren – Zayden Ware, Lance and Liam Bowman, Camille Scott, and Levi Bowman.
She is also survived by her siblings Drucilla Poleon (Sean), Claudette Burgess, Avril Granville (Lloyd), Phyllis Marshall (Martin), Bernadette Martial-Edwards, Keith Martial (Philesta), Marlon Martial, Roxanne Marques (Anthony), Karen Martial-Emanuel, and Deborah Martial-Henry, along with many nieces, nephews, cousins, extended family, and friends!
In addition to her son Mark, Mattie was also preceded in death by her siblings Danton Innocent Edgar, George Tobierre, Colin Martial, Felix Carl Martial, Ezra Edgar, Rose Eugene, and Edol Thompson, as well as several nieces, nephews, and cousins.
She will be dearly missed by her family and by all whose lives she touched.
