Nail Gumerov was a senior research scientist in UMIACS for almost 20 years.
His research interests were broad and include scientific computing and algorithms related to applied mathematics, fluid mechanics, acoustics, electromagnetism, plasma physics, nanoscience, and more. Gumerov was particularly interested in fast multipole methods (FMM) and their applications, for which he developed a course taught for several years to students studying computer science, mathematics, mechanical and electrical engineering. His research interests also included programming of graphics processors, use of heterogeneous architectures, and scalable algorithms for supercomputing.
Gumerov has written more than 160 research publications, including a large monograph on the FMM (co-authored with UMIACS faculty member Ramani Duraiswami and published by Elsevier, Oxford, UK, 2005), and more than 40 papers in scientific archival journals on applied mathematics, fluid mechanics, computational physics, numerical methods, and algorithms.
He served as an associate editor for the Journal of the Acoustical Society of America. Gumerov has also collaborated with the Bashkir State University in Russia (the Center for Micro- and Nanoscale Dynamics of Dispersed Systems) as a scientific advisor and professor-consultant.
Gumerov has authored and co-authored several efficient algorithm implementations, software, and inventions, and as a co-author he was a finalist for the university's Invention of the Year awards in information technology in 2002 and 2005, and winner of the award in 2008.
He received his doctorate from the Lomonosov Moscow State University in fluid mechanics in 1987. He also received his Sc.D. degree in physics and mathematics from Tyumen State University in 1992, which is the highest scientific degree in the former USSR and Russia. Gumerov has resided and worked in the U.S. since 1993.

**Words from his wife**
HE LIVED, THOUGHT AND CREATED
IN A SCALES OF THE UNIVERSE…
In Loving Memory Of Dr. Nail A. Gumerov, professor of Math and Physics UMD, Advanced Computer Studies Division, the Top Science Researcher 2021, Poet, Musician, Painter, great Art lover, loving husband, father of 5 daughters, and 8 grandchildren.
Nail was a unique genius, a strong and powerful man — a bright person, that usually came in to this world from the God for a special mission.
Nail was born in Ufa, South Ural, Russia, in 1960, and from his childhood amazed the family with outstanding math talents. He was a gifted child and got the best education that only was possible in USSR. At16 years old Nail became a student of Moscow University, Mechanic and Higher Math faculty.
Nail got all degrees in his skill so rapidly and became the first Science researcher in the Northern Problems Institute, Tyumen. Being only 29 years old, he had many articles and a very high citation index in the world.
After Nail got his doctor’s degree, at 29 years old, he moved with his family to the USA. America became his second Homeland. Nail was inspired by the Spirit of this great country. His daughter Mary was born here, he was an amazing father and guardian of his children. He taught them how to be a human, first of all. And how to be a part of Human History and Culture, always following the heart’s highest dreams.
During his life time Dr. Gumerov created more then 500 articles, 248 published in world famous journals. Nail created few books in Math and Literature, more than a hundred unique proposals in Acoustic, Quantum and Fluid Mechanic, Engineering. He took part in many brilliant projects and national programs, and worked for NASA. Above all of this, Nail created his own methods of scientific calculations, that helps to verify everything in Nature — from nano participles to the space objects.

The Dr. Gumerov’s Science heritage is huge and unique. His place in the World Culture is bright and unique. His work and deeds for Humankind is blessed and unforgettable.
As a person, Nail loved to listen to music, created beautiful melodies, poems, and paintings. He loved to travel, visit churches and holy places around the world, play guitar, piano, and chess. Most of all he loved his family and kids. Nail and his wife Larisa spent 33 years together.
Unfortunately his life suddenly ended on his 62nd birthday.
Our Lord Jesus is meeting His Messenger now in the Heaven. Here on the Earth we are saying THANK YOU, NAIL!
GREAT JOB, VIVAT! WE ARE AMAZED OF YOU! WE WILL LOVE YOU FOREVER!
