Nancy Lee Hooper, our dear Stump, 88, of Ellicott City passed away June 12, 2026. She was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Walt, and her sister June. She is survived by her children, Mitch (Jacqui) and Kathy (Will), her grandchildren, Michael, Jonathan and Alison, and her sister, Linda (Bill).
Born to Nellie and Carl Welker, Nancy was a true Baltimore girl. She took the streetcar downtown to shop for her family or see shows at the Hippodrome (Swing and Sway with Sammy Kaye), she worked part time at Hutzler’s, hung out at Five Oaks Pool in Catonsville in the summer, and she had a short career at “The Phone Company” (C & P Telephone).
Nancy married Walt Hooper, who was just finishing his Air Force service, within a few months of her graduation from Forest Park High School. They shared almost 69 years of marriage adventures. Nancy was a typical 1960’s stay at home Mom – pitching in behind the scenes at school, perpetually on the set up or clean up crew for this dance or that party, or grooming a baseball infield for Walt.
In the mid 1970s, after Mitch and Kathy moved on to high school, Nancy restarted her part time working career. She was a sales clerk, a nanny (that was great fun for the entire family, Melissa!), a waitress, and she finally retired after her time as a private house cleaner. In retirement, she spent a lot of her time at the gym or in a pool with her Elkridge water aerobics friends.
Nancy could not wait to be a grandmother, luckily her sister June shared her grandchildren! By the time Michael, Jonathan and Alison arrived on the scene, she had saved up so much love and silliness to share with them, and Walt brought enough ice cream for the whole gang. Fun was had by all.
She loved her cruises with Walt, the beach with family, ski trips with the South Carroll friends, a glass of Merlot.
She will be missed.
A private family gathering will be held at a later date.
