Paul James Hurlbut

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Paul Hurlbut, who died on July 11, 2026, at the age of 90.

Paul was born on June 6, 1936, in Detroit, Michigan, to Willard F. and Ruth Hurlbut. He spent his early years in Detroit before moving to Miami, Florida, to finish high school. At the age of 19, he joined the U.S. Army and was stationed in Eritrea during the height of the Cold War, where he worked in global intelligence gathering. After returning home in 1958, Paul settled in Maryland, just outside Washington, D.C., where he built his own business and the life he loved.

Paul embraced life with enthusiasm and adventure. He raced cars, skydived (by choice), flew small airplanes, bought a motorcycle the very day his first grandchild was born, and continued skiing until he was 79 years old. Alongside his wife, Millie, he traveled the world, visiting nearly every continent and creating a lifetime of unforgettable memories. They were also devoted fans and proud season ticket holders of the Washington Commanders, a tradition they began in 1964.

Paul was a loyal friend to many. He was one of the "cool guys," a close-knit group of four friends who, sadly, all passed before him. He never judged others and accepted everyone for who they were. If someone needed help, Paul was there without hesitation. The saying that he would "give you the shirt off his back" truly described the way he lived.

Above all else, Paul found his greatest joy in his family. His happiest moments were spent as a husband to Millie, a father to his daughter, Mary, and as "Granpa" to his two grandsons, Colin and Christopher. They were his beloved "buddies," and he delighted in spoiling them with love, laughter, and unwavering support.

Paul was preceded in death by his wife of 57 years, Millie Hurlbut; his parents; and his three brothers. He is survived by his daughter and son-in-law, Mary and Dave Floyd; his grandsons, Colin and Christopher; his nieces, Judy Dalal and Cheryl Mallett; his nephew, Ricky Acker; and several great-nieces and nephews, and great-great-nieces and nephews.

A Funeral Mass will be celebrated on Monday, July 20, at 10:00 a.m. at St. Augustine Catholic Church, 5976 Old Washington Road, Elkridge, MD 21075. A repast will follow at the home of Mary and Dave Floyd, 6058 Claire Drive, Elkridge, MD 21075.

Those who are unable to attend the Mass are warmly invited to join the family at the Floyd home to celebrate Paul's life, share stories, and remember the many ways he touched the lives of those who knew and loved him.
