Maryland Automobile Dealers Associationis saddened to announce the passing of Bob Bell,a leader in our industry.
IN MEMORIAM Robert L. Bell (March 5, 1933 - July 10, 2011) It is with sadness that MADA reports the passing of Robert Bell of the Bob Bell Automotive Group. Mr. Bell, a former MADA Board member and TIME Magazine Quality Dealer of the Year nominee and finalist, was a true leader in our local industry. Our deepest condolences go out to Mr. Bell's family and friends, his employees, and his customers. Mr. Bell passed away on July 10th from leukemia with his family at his side. He was 78 years old. Bob was born in Alexandria, Virginia and as a teenager was selected to be a Senate page. He proudly served in the Korean War and upon his discharge attended the University of Virginia. In 1956, he was hired by the Ford Motor Company and did such a good job that he and his friend, Tom Lynch, opened Academy Ford in Laurel, Maryland. In 1979, Bob came to Baltimore and opened Bob Bell Ford in Glen Burnie. From that came the Bob Bell Automotive Group which today includes 7 franchises at 4 locations around Baltimore. Famous for playing the piano in a pink tuxedo, Bob became one of the best known automotive dealers in Maryland. He loved high performance cars, was an avid sports fisherman and won the White Marlin Open in 1992. Bob married his childhood sweetheart, Rosemarie Carter, over 60 years ago and he leaves his wife, five daughters, 19 grandchildren, 4 great-grandchildren and his beloved dog, Lacey. Near the end, Bob found solace knowing that his family will be carrying on his legacy.
