Sammy attended Saint Joseph Boys School from kindergarten through high school. He then enrolled at Addis Ababa University for one year after which he moved to the United States and completed his bachelor’s degree in Business Administration at Northland College in Ashland, Wisconsin.
Upon his graduation, Sammy moved to Los Angeles where he worked in the financial industry for several firms.
In July 2005, Sammy moved back to Ethiopia to take care of his ailing father and spent the better part of a year dutifully tending to him. Fifteen days after his father’s passing, Sammy suddenly fell ill and he was soon diagnosed with brain cancer. He moved back to America, this time to Maryland where his sister Sara lived with her family. For the next 15 years, Sammy fought valiantly and with dignity against his aggressive disease doted on by his sister and her family until he succumbed to his illness on July 31, 2021.
Sammy loved his family and his friends. His bond with Sara was strong and unshakable. He was a great cook and enjoyed preparing and eating good food, bowling, listening to music, working on puzzles and watching movies. He greeted all who crossed his path with a warm smile, a kind word and a twinkle in his eye. He was never bitter despite the challenges he faced. Sammy will be remembered for his kindness, his fortitude and his appreciation for the simple, quiet things in life and will be sorely missed.
He is preceded in death by his parents and his sister Hirut Woldemichael. He is survived by his sister Sara and his nephew Mekonnen SahleSelassie.
The service will conducted at Ethiopian Orthodox Tewahedo Debre Berhan Holy Trinity Church in Baltimore, Maryland on Thursday, August 5 followed by his interment at Meadowridge Memorial Park in Elkridge, Maryland.
