Stanley Fletcher Howell was born on January 16th, 1937 in Smiths Station, AL to Rev. Edgar A. Howell and Evelyn (Fountain) Howell, and was the youngest of three boys. His father, a pastor, was moved frequently by the United Methodist Convention, so Stan spent much of his childhood in several towns throughout Kentucky. His family moved to Delta, PA and then to Cockeysville, MD. Stan was graduated in 1955 from Towson Senior High School where he played on the baseball team. He then attended Western Maryland College (now McDaniel College) and was graduated with a degree in Physics in 1959. During the summer he worked for the Forest Service in Montana and Idaho.
Stan joined the US Air Force in 1961 and served as a navigator, primarily stationed in California and Texas. After he was grounded for medical reasons, he left the Air Force in 1964 as a 1st Lieutenant.
Stan married Faith Waters on June 26th, 1965 at Aldersgate Methodist Church in Baltimore where his father was pastor. They moved to Houston, TX where Stan worked for NASA at the Manned Space Flight Center designing ways to help astronauts exit the capsule safely after splashdown. After returning to Maryland, he pursued a PhD in Biochemistry at the University of Maryland, though for family reasons he had to discontinue his studies.
While living in Elkridge, MD, Stan & Faith welcomed their son, Gregory Thomas, on November 15, 1967. On March 19, 1970, they added a daughter, Valerie Faith; however, she passed away only hours later after a difficult pregnancy and premature delivery.
Stan worked for several years at the Shock Trauma clinical lab at University of Maryland Hospital. He then worked for the National Security Agency for many years before retiring in 2002. He worked several years more for government contractor ViaSat before fully retiring.
Stan came to a saving knowledge of the Lord Jesus Christ in 1970, and was a devoted follower ever after. He taught Sunday School, sang in the choir, served as a deacon, and was involved in many other ministries with several Bible-believing churches. Most recently, he served as Dean of the Bible college and institute sponsored by Arlington Baptist Church. His passionate love for God’s Word led him to study the Bible extensively, and in 2007 he was awarded a Doctor of Theology degree from Andersonville Theological Seminary.
Stan loved to travel, especially to see historical sights. He had a life-long love of aviation, and even took a few flying lessons. He also enjoyed woodworking, and built several pieces of furniture over the years. He loved singing, watching sports, and fellowshipping with family and friends.
Stan went to be with the Lord on November 14th, 2025 due to congestive heart failure caused by a recurrence of Lyme’s Disease. He was preceded in death by his two older brothers, Kenneth Edgar Howell and Hugh Benton Howell, as well as by his daughter Valerie Faith Howell.
He is survived by his wife, Faith Howell and son, Gregory Howell.
