Steven Lyle Nicewarner of Elkridge, a beloved husband, father, grandson, son, brother, and cherished member of the community, passed away peacefully on Saturday, August 24, 2024 at home, surrounded by his family. He was 61 years old.
Steve was the devoted husband of Cindy Jones Nicewarner, the proud father of Jenny Nicewarner, Rob Nicewarner (Nicole), and Johnna Aleshire (Alex); dear brother of Pam Hummer (Carroll), loving son of Lyle Joe Nicewarner, cherished grandfather of Kennedy Nicewarner and Stevie Aleshire. Also survived by several nieces and nephews and a host of other family and friends who will remember him with great affection. He was predeceased by his beloved mother, Dorothy Billmyer Nicewarner.
His family was his greatest joy, and he especially enjoyed time spent with them at Lake Gaston and Myrtle Beach. He attended all their dance recitals, school functions, games, scouting activities and special celebrations. He was ever present for his family.
A passionate sports fan, Steve was a devoted follower of the Baltimore Orioles, Ravens, and the Washington Capitals. He loved the thrill of Fantasy Football, always bringing enthusiasm and knowledge to his leagues. His dedication extended beyond watching sports; he was also an avid bowler and took great pleasure in sharing these activities with friends and family.
Steve’s commitment to his faith was a cornerstone of his life, providing him with strength and guidance especially during difficult times. He spent many years as a confirmation guide and a high school Sunday school teacher at St. John Evangelical Lutheran Church, and took great pride in it. He especially enjoyed chaperoning the confirmation retreats held at River Valley Ranch.
His dedication to community service was recognized in 1993 when he was presented with the Giant Food Jacob and Charlotte Lehrman Community Service Award and the National Good Neighbor Award sponsored by the supermarket industry. He was a member of Clarksville Area and Elkridge Area Jaycees, was Santa Claus for many Jaycee community functions including “Visits with Santa”, coached Elkridge Youth Organization basketball and baseball teams, and was very active in the Civilian Welfare Fund (CWF) organization at work where he especially enjoyed volunteering with Christmas for underprivileged children.
His connection to his alma matter Shepherd University in Shepherdstown, West Virginia and Delta Sigma Pi Business Fraternity, Epsilon Kappa Chapter was a testament to his enduring spirit and dedication to lifelong friendships.
Professionally, Steve contributed his skills and dedication to Giant Food. Giant Food played a significant role in Steve’s life. He started working in Giant stores during high school and moved to their headquarters working in the Construction Department in Landover, MD after college graduation. He left after 20 years of service. His second career, for the Department of Defense, ended with his very recent retirement where he completed 20 years of service. He was dedicated to the mission and especially treasured his co-workers there.
Steve’s love for dogs was evident to all who knew him; they were a source of comfort and joy throughout his life. His kindness, humor, and generous spirit will be deeply missed by all who had the privilege of knowing him.
