He was born to the late Neil and Sarah Winegar on October 30, 1923 in Ellensburg. Truman graduated from Ellensburg High School in 1942.
In lieu of serving in World War II he was asked to be the head DHIA (milk tester) for Whitman County in Walla Walla. While there he met and married Phoebe Weaver, his late wife of 53 years. In 1949 they returned to Ellensburg where he partnered with Charles Wilson and launched his life long career as a dairyman. He retired in 1988. He found companionship with Joann Whitaker and they married on April 5, 1999.
Those who knew him appreciated his gentle spirit, strength of character, quick wit, love of animals and nature and his zeal to support what he believed in. He enjoyed serving the Ellensburg community as founder and owner of Winegar’s Drive in Dairy. He was a member of the Ellensburg Rodeo Posse and Rodeo Board. He also supported the Washington State Dairyman’s Association and served in leadership roles within that organization. He also served 6 years as a board member on the Washington Dairy Products Commission.
Truman was preceded in death by his parents, wife Phoebe, three brothers and three sisters. He is survived by his wife Joann Winegar: one brother Don Winegar: two sons Gary (Margo) Winegar and Greg (Patricia) Winegar. He was adored by his 7 grandchildren and 19 great-grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews. In his sunset years his family extended as he welcomed and received the love and respect of Joann’s son Dennis Christopherson and daughters Susie Christopherson, Debbie Skinner and Julie Christopherson and their families.
A celebration of his life will be held at The Armory Main Hall, 901 E 7th Ave in Ellensburg on Saturday, October 11, 2014 at 1:30 pm.
