Alice was born October 8, 1928, in Wausau Wisconsin. She was the youngest child of Martha Emelia (Grosskopf) Hintze and Charles Arden Hintze. She told stories of a happy childhood with loving parents.
After high school, she attended Deaconess Hospital’s Nursing School in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, earning her 3-year degree. During this time, she went on a blind date with Melvin Carl Kuschel. They were married March 31, 1951. Dad said he knew he would marry her the day he met her. Mom said it took a while to realize he was “the one.” They would joke that she married him because he took a starving student from the dorm out to eat! Her best story from nurses training was when she went into a maternity patient's room and the woman said her water broke. Mom told her “Not to worry, she would get her another one”.
Mel and Alice provided a loving home and a Christian education for their three children, Mary Jo (Kuschel) Unland, Ann Marie (Kuschel) Wilm, and Steven Carl Kuschel. We have wonderful memories of family vacations to Wyoming, Niagara Falls and frequently to Boulder Junction Wisconsin to go fishing and camping. They were active in their church, Emmaus Lutheran Church in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. In that church they found a circle of friends that became the A-to-Z club. They rotated houses monthly enjoying dinner, card playing and fellowship. The group of families camped together, all bringing their children with them. In this group they formed friendships that lasted a lifetime.
Alice worked as a nurse at St. Joseph's Hospital in Milwaukee for her entire career. She advanced from nursing into supervision and then management positions. In 1979 she earned her Bachelor’s degree while still working full-time.
Mel and Alice retired to their home in Boulder Junction WI in 1989. Again, they formed another group of friends from their church and had frequent gatherings to play cards and celebrate life!
Our parents raised us to always put God first, our family second, and then our friends as priorities. They also lived this way in their lives.
Alice loved being a grandmother and a great grandmother (Gi-Gi) for short. Her grandchildren describe her as the most positive person they ever met and someone who always listened and had time for them.
She is survived by two daughters, Mary Jo (Roger) Unland, Ann (Dennis) Wilm, one son, Steven Carl Kuschel, 7 grandchildren, 17 great grandchildren, beloved nieces, other relatives and many friends.
She was preceded in death by her husband Mevin Carl Kuschel, her brother Charles Hintze, her sisters Mary Mueller and Edith Ann Hintze, and two grandsons, Allen Lee Unland and Nathan Michael Kuschel.
Services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday January 11, 2025 at Beautiful Savior Lutheran Church. The address is 7461 Prospect Road, Sarasota FL 34243
She will be laid to rest beside Melvin at Miramar National Cemetery, site 531 on a date to be determined in September, 2025, in San Diego, California.
Her wish for her survivors in her own words is this: That they have “A good solid faith in the Lord and to find a life for themselves that they can be comfortable and content.” Her unwavering trust in the Lord (Psalm 23) throughout her life is a testimony to us all.
