

Dr. Bommakanti Shyam ("Sam") Sunder, 1941-2013 Dr. Bommakanti Shyam Sunder, known affectionately as "Sam" to his friends, passed away early Sunday morning with his wife by his side. The son of Ramanamma and Bommakanti Ramana Rao, a professor of agriculture, Dr. Sunder grew up in Hyderabad, India. A graduate of the Gandhi Medical College in Hyderabad, he moved to the United States on January 1, 1969, after a brief stay in the United Kingdom for two years. He did his residency in internal medicine at the PolyClinic Hospital in Manhattan. He moved to Newark, New Jersey, and completed a fellowship in cardiology at St. Michael's Medical Center. A compassionate doctor, he was in private practice in internal medicine & cardiology in Somers Point, New Jersey, from 1974 to 1999. He was the medical staff president at Shore Memorial Hospital in Somers Point in 1996. In 2006, he and his wife, also a physician, retired in Lakewood Ranch, Florida. He was a happy-go-lucky man with a thoroughly modern outlook. In Lakewood Ranch, he most enjoyed playing bridge with friends, golf with his wife, and mini-golf with his grandchildren. He is survived by his wife, Dr. Manikyam Tilak ("Mona") Sunder, his two children, son- and daughter-in-law, two grandchildren, and many sisters, brothers, nieces and nephews. Services will take place at Groover Funeral Home at Mansion Memorial Park, 1400 36th Ave E., Ellenton, FL 34222 Hindu Ceremony Wednesday, December 18, 2013, 9-10am Eulogy and Viewing 10:30-noon with cremation to follow.
