

Josephine Agnes Cerny Kurina, 100, was born February 17, 1926 in Chicago, IL to Joseph and Agnes Lukas Cerny, both were immigrants from Czechoslovakia and she was always proud of her Czech heritage including delicious foods, dancing, and festive music. She moved to Lyons, Il after losing her mother at three years of age. Mary became her stepmother and has a sister Helen, and brother Richard. As a young girl she loved spending her summers on the Ondrus Farm near Carson City, MI. Josephine went to school until the 10th grade in the summer of 1942 she went to work at Western Electric at the age of 16. It was a war plant and she made parts for the Army and Navy. She was our own Posie. Fannie May Candy was across the street from Western Electric, it has become a staple in our house till present time. Josephine married John Kurina on May 17, 1947 at St. Hugh's Catholic Church in Lyons, Il. Daughter Nancy was born, and in 1952 they moved to Parrish, Fl.She sold citrus fruit and tended to 1,000 chickens winning many blue ribbons at the Manatee County Fair. Then daughters Joann and Janet were born. We lived on the farm till 1975. Then moved to the Kurina Property where fruit was sold to Tropicana and became a housewife where she lived out the rest of her life in Parrish enjoying her plants and the nature that came to her yard, Through the years: Mom loved her family. Mom encouraged her three daughters to be in 4H. She attended St. Francis X Cabrini Church. She traveled to Europe twice for her 45th and 50th reunion of husband John from the 30th Infantry Division during his WWII service. Plus numerous reunions throughout the US. She never drove anything in her life. She loves a good story, and she loved to celebrate birthdays and holidays. She loved the color purple. Josephine is survived by daughters Nancy, JoAnn (Robert) and Janet. Three grandchildren John, Melanie (Ryan), Russell (Nicole), and was overjoyed to have four great-grandchildren in 2025. She also has many Nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends throughout the US.
