Libertad was born on August 1, 1936 in Aguas Buenas, Puerto Rico to Ramon “El Zorro” Fernandez and Juana Agosto. As one of 17 children, Libertad was surrounded by the joys that come with having a large family.
After moving to NJ in 1968, Libertad spent her early years working as a seamstress before becoming a homemaker and devoting her life as a caregiver to her husband, daughters, and grandchildren. She was known for her charm, grace, and unwavering faith.
She was an avid volunteer at St John’s Cathedral in Paterson, NJ where she sang in the Spanish choir, started the Spanish Charismatic Renewal, and was a founder for its renovation. Her dedication and love for the St. John’s Cathedral was often recognized as she was bestowed many honors for her work; most notably, Woman of the Year in 1993 and a Papal blessing for her 50th wedding anniversary.
After relocating to Florida in 2005, she settled in Palmetto where she found a new home at the Holy Cross Catholic Church. She became an Adult Spanish CCD teacher as well as a Eucharistic minister. Even when her health began to decline, she remained devoted and would attend services virtually every Sunday.
In her spare time, Libertad enjoyed cooking, sewing, crocheting, and doing Word Search puzzle. She loved to read her bible, praying with and for others, spending time with family and friends, laughing, and always wearing a smile. She was a loving and caring person always thinking of others first, “To Know Her Was to Love Her.”
She is survived by her doting husband of 62 years, Miguel A. Rivera; her daughters Carmen Martinez (Miguel Martinez, husband), Sonia Rivera, and Myrna Rivera; along with 9 grandchildren, 10 great grandchildren as well as numerous nieces, nephews, and extended family.
The family would like to express their gratitude for all of the love, support, and prayers they have received during this difficult and trying time. In the words of their beloved Libertad, “Siempre Con Dios Adelante!”
