Phillip Dale Hoffmann, 73, of Bradenton, Florida passed away unexpectedly on September 3, 2021 with his loving wife by his side. Phil was born in Madison, Indiana on September 7, 1947. After graduating from Shaw Memorial High school in 1965, Phil completed his Masonry apprenticeship then pursued a career in the military as an officer in the Army. He served 3 years of active-duty service in the Vietnam War and 3 additional years in the reserve unit as an Army Captain and Commanding Officer over the reserves of Jefferson County Proving Ground.
While serving in the Army Reserves, he also started a local Masonry Construction Company in his hometown of Madison, Indiana. When he wanted a larger and more challenging experience with his masonry duties, he went off to work for Sibbald Masonry, which was located in Columbia, South Carolina. He later became their Field Superintendent and Manager of projects covering four different states. With his talent and expertise in the field, he was in high demand and managed to work for several large contractors over the years in the Southeastern states, including Pyramid Masonry, which was located in Atlanta, Georgia. Working for Pyramid Masonry, he successfully completed many award-winning projects such as Dr. Phillip’s High school in Orlando, Florida and Southeast High school in Bradenton, Florida. He also completed well-known projects such as State Regional Serves Ct in Jacksonville, Florida and even Emeril’s Restaurant at Universal Studios in Orlando, Florida.
When Phil had retired from the construction life and decided to settle down in Palmetto, Florida decided to work for Manatee County Building and Development Services where he met and married the woman of his dreams, Kathy A. Manning. He was the longest serving volunteer with the City of Palmetto Code Enforcement Board. He later retired from the county in 2014 from the Judicial Center as Facility Supervisor. Phil loved hunting, fishing, boating, horses and horse racing and he had a great sense of humor and loved to tell people that his initials PDH really stood for “Pretty Damn Handsome” everybody around him could also exclaim that there was not another person that was so full of life. He was a great storyteller and he always mentioned how great his life was so he would never want anybody to be sad, instead smile and remember all of the great memories he shared with those who knew him.
Phil was a member of The Knights of Columbus, Veterans of Foreign Wars post #4286, DAV chapter #18, AMVETS post #301, The American Legion post #0309, and Loyal Order of the Palmetto Moose Lodge & Legion #2117.
Phil is survived by his wife, Kathy; sisters, Viki Thevenow, Niki Kring (Robbie), Michelle Mouser (Gary), and Becky May (John); sisters-in-law, Becky Manning and Mary Masterson (Missy); brothers-in-law William Manning (Teresa) and Robert Manning (Amy); along with a host of many nieces, nephews, and great nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Anna L. Hoffmann Thevenow, Edward C. and Ethel M. Hoffmann; sisters, Betty Jenkins (JW), Mae Sommer (Bernard), Mary Craig (Jim), and Theresa Thevenow.
Committal services will be held at Sarasota National Cemetery in Sarasota, Florida and a celebration of life will be held at a later date in Madison, Indiana at the Knight of Columbus.
