

Myakka City—Shirley D. Hurley, 53, died on Wednesday, November 10, 2021. She was born December 18, 1967 in Bethesda, Maryland.
Shirley graduated from Bayshore High School where she was a Honey Bear, Class of 1985. Following graduation she put herself through Manatee Community College and the University of South Florida where she received a bachelor's degree in English Education. After teaching English for a few years she decided to pursue a master’s degree in School Counseling from the University of South Florida. She was an English teacher at Braden River Middle and Haile Middle. She was a school counselor at Southeast High, Palmetto High, Braden River High, and Nolan Middle School. She was the Director of Guidance Services, the Coordinator of Advanced Studies and the AVID District Director.
In 1995 Shirley married Deron Hurley and they settled in Palmetto, FL, and later moving to Myakka City. In 2002, she and Deron welcomed the love of her life, Trenton Connor Hurley. This past June, she and Deron celebrated 26 years of marriage.
Shirley was the Student Government Sponsor at Palmetto High School, a former Rotarian, a member of Leadership Manatee, and a member of the Southeast and Braden River FFA Alumni Associations, she was also an accomplished dancer in tap, jazz, ballet, toe, acrobat, and baton.
She is survived by husband, Deron P. Hurley; son, Trent C. Hurley; mother, Sandra Ellsworth and stepfather, Bob Ellsworth; brother, John (Melissa) Darley, brother, Gene (Misty) Darley, mother-in-law, Joan Hurley and father-in-law, Jerry Hurley; sister-in-law, Sharon (Dan) Rypel; nieces, Taryn Darley, Sandra Darley, Aimee Darley, and Amanda Williamson; nephews, Tanner Darley, Logan Rypel, and Jon Zaccari.
She is preceded in death by Mary Dulin, maternal grandmother; Sidney Dulin, maternal grandfather; and Warren G. Lakey, maternal grandfather.
Visitation will be Wednesday, November 17, 2021, 5:30-8:00PM at Groover Funeral Home, 1400 36th Ave E (Ellenton-Gillette Rd), Ellenton, FL 34222.
Funeral services will be Thursday, November 18, 2021, at 11:00AM at North River Church, 5517 Ft. Hamer Rd, Parrish, FL 34219. A celebration luncheon will follow the service. The service will be live streamed on the North River Church Facebook page and at www.gonorthriver.org
