Alfred Peter Minaya, 89, passed away peacefully in his home on Monday, November 18, 2019.

Alfred was born in The Bronx, New York and lived most of his adult life in Los Angeles, where he raised his three daughters with his beloved wife Phyllis. Al was a devoted husband and father, a sports enthusiast, an Army veteran and devout Catholic.

Al received his bachelor’s and master’s degrees from Colorado State College of Education. His career in education spanned over four decades as a coach, teacher and school counselor. After retiring from Inglewood Unified School district, he and Phyllis moved to the Ocean Hills community in Oceanside, California, where he spent many hours at the clubhouse and on the golf course. At home, he always had a ball game on the TV and a jigsaw puzzle on the table.

He is preceded in death by his parents, Antonio Minaya and Gloria Varona and his brother, Anthony Minaya. He is survived by his wife Phyllis Oster Minaya; brother George (Alice); children, Anna Minaya LaNave (Gregory), Gloria Minaya (Susan Balsam); and Linda Minaya Tansey; grandchildren, Lucia LaNave, Dominic LaNave, Antonio LaNave and Vincent LaNave; Zachariah Minaya; Nikolas Tansey and Julie Tansey.

Funeral mass will be at 11am, Monday, November 25, 2019, at St. Thomas More Catholic Church, 1450 S. Melrose Drive, Oceanside, California 92056, with burial at a later date in a private ceremony at Miramar National Cemetery, San Diego, California. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the St. Thomas More Building Completion Fund.
