Alida C Harms
February 18, 1929 – February 24, 2018
Mrs. Donald F. Harms (Alida Marie Cordone), 89, longtime resident of La Costa, in Encinitas, California; February 18, 1929 - February 24, 2018.
We are greatly saddened to note the quiet passing in her sleep of Mrs. Donald F. Harms (Alida Marie Cordone), 89, longtime resident of La Costa, California, on February 24, 2018 from general infirmities of age and, most likely, a broken heart as both her beloved husband Donald F. Harms, in August and her darling daughter, Lynette Kathleen Harms, preceded her in December of 2017.
Alida, born in Los Angeles, California, on February 18, 1929, to proud parents, Joseph and Agostina Cordone, was youngest child after her two brothers, Joseph and Philip.
She lived a happy childhood, went to school through the 30"s Depression years and was kid sister to her two grown-up musician brothers who played in the big Hollywood bands during the Swing era.
As a teenager during World War II, such was the spirit of the time; she often accompanied her two brothers, now musicians in the Army, to Muroc Dry Lake Army Air Force Base (now Edwards AFB) and other civilian and military venues where they performed for USO events. Everyone contributed to the war effort; she was a nurse's aide.
On one of these trips, she met Donald Harms, a dashing young Corporal in an Anti-Aircraft unit from Illinois, who was on his way to the front in Germany. From such moments, history makes itself…
Over the next years of the War, they wrote one another frequently and, upon his return from overseas in 1946, they married. Not long after, they began their family of six and their careers (he, an Aerospace engineer with Lockheed and she, a high fashion model and house wife). What followed was a fine, long and productive life together that has only ended just now, these 70 some years later.
Her three sons, Phil, Donn and Chris Harms, her 10 grandchildren and her 5 great grand children, survive Alida. Many others, too numerous to list, have felt her kind influence as well and share our grief at her loss and hope for a joyous reunion some day perhaps in that Heavenly realm.
Alida, known as "Nonni" by those closest to her, was a very kind and gentle soul; she had a loving and generous heart, and was always giving. We shall truly miss her.
The Harms family humbly thanks her friends, her longtime daily caregivers and the many members of the Hospice-By-The-Sea, Solana Beach for their gracious assistance with both our parents during these last several months of their lives.
There will be a brief Memorial Service for Alida on Monday, March 26, 2018 at Veterans' Cemetery in San Diego. For those friends and family who plan to attend, please be sure to arrive by 11:30 AM for the 12 Noon service.
