Jeffrey touched the lives of so many. He recently said, “The world will remember me.” And indeed, it will. If we could gather together all the people whose lives he touched, I think we would fill a concert hall, maybe even a stadium. Jeffrey left behind so many family members and friends, all who loved him dearly. He had a way of bringing people together and of bringing joy to every get-together. His laugh was contagious, I hope to hear it in my mind always.
Jeffrey was born in Chicago, Illinois, to Phyllis (Motyll) DeRolf and David Motyll on May 11, 1971. Jeffrey received his Bachelor of Arts degree from Indiana University. Shortly after graduation he left Chicago with friends to pursue a career in motion graphics and video production/editing in the San Diego, California area. He knew he would find his life and success there and never looked back.
Jeffrey was an early creator in video motion graphics, and had his own business, Cirrus Motion Media. He worked on many surf and music films, as well as projects for multiple corporate clients, and traveled the world for his work. Jeffrey had excellent hand-eye coordination and was very athletic, and good at anything he tried. He especially loved golfing and skateboarding, and he learned to surf when he moved to California. Back in high school, Jeffrey and his friends built a half-pipe in his yard for skateboarding. The crew became locally famous, known as the Tri-Town Skaters. Jeffrey was asked by a newspaper reporter what a “poser” was. His response: “A poser is a person who dresses like a skater and acts like one but doesn’t skate.” Jeffrey was never a poser. Jeffrey was also very skilled in Taekwondo and achieved the rank of Black Belt at a young age. He was always a cat person and loved his cat, Blue. Jeffrey also loved music and was always introducing his family and friends to new music and artists.
Jeffrey was passionate about his work and found a career doing what he truly loved. He was skilled in so many aspects of the video and film industry, but his primary profession was as a motion graphic artist, with experience in every aspect of the art, including motion graphics, 3D design and surfing and music industries. Jeffrey is survived by his loving son, Aiden Motyll, mother, Phyllis DeRolf, sister, Kristin (Jeff) Joyce; aunts, Patricia Leck, June (Bill) Paul and Shirley Kistner. He had a close bond with his niece and nephew Emily Joyce and David Joyce; his cousins, Stacy (Jeff) Stainton, Craig Durr, Lynette (Tim) Harms and Ross Leck; and step-sisters Kate DeRolf and Amie (Mike) Frassinone and their children (his niece and nephews). Jeffrey had so many friends, friends who were like brothers to him, like Matt Campbell and Jeff Bastian, and we are so thankful they have been a part of his life.
Fond memories and expressions of sympathy may be shared at www.encinitaschapel.com for the Motyll family.
