It is with a heavy heart that we announce the passing of John Yuhas, on April 8, 2020, after a brave fight with cancer. John, originally from Fords, New Jersey, was a graduate of Rider College in Lawrenceville, New Jersey. He then enlisted in the Navy, attended Officers Candidate School, and was stationed on Coronado Island in San Diego, California. While at Coronado, he trained in Underwater Demolition (“UDT”), which was a precursor to the Navy Seals. His experience in the Navy was one of his proudest accomplishments and he continued to volunteer his time to various activities in support of veterans throughout his life.
While in the service, and after having two children, John starting his civilian life in California with jobs in sales for Proctor and Gamble as well as Travelers Insurance. While at Travelers, an opportunity to work in local government presented itself and John was thrilled. He worked for the then Supervisor of San Bernardino County, Ruben Ayala, for a number of years before becoming a real estate agent and broker. Eventually John was able to combine his love of public service and real estate by taking the position of Real Property Manager of San Bernardino County. In November of 1990 he married his loving wife, Mary Ann Bornmann, also from New Jersey. John and Mary Ann were able to enjoy a wonderful life full of travel and family time. They originally settled in Claremont, California and eventually found their way to his favorite place to live, La Costa Glen Retirement Community in Carlsbad, California.
John and Mary Ann were involved in many committees and activities but John's favorite was being able to perform in the community's talent shows and productions. He was especially proud of the fact that he got to do this with his wife and that she was also a major writing contributor. John with be remembered for his twinkling blue eyes, infectious laugh and sense of humor.
He will also be remembered for his love of horses, service to the community and his ability to make anyone he met feel like a long time friend. He is survived by his loving wife, Mary Ann Bornmann-Yuhas, his daughter, Maryann Baker and her husband Simon, and his son, John A. Yuhas. He is also survived by his step children, Carl, Gregory and Melissa Bornmann, Carl's wife Kelly Bornmann, and grandchildren Michael and Katie Yuhas, and Carly and Malcolm Bornmann, as well, of course, by many loving friends. In lieu of remembrances, the family requests that donations be made in memory of John's courageous battle to The Scripps MD Anderson Cancer Center.
