Naomi was the daughter of Earl and Isabel Peters, born in Kankakee, Illinois on November 3, 1925. She graduated from the University of Illinois, where she was a member of Alpha Xi Delta Sorority. There she met the love of her life, Robert “Bob” Slyder, a dashing war veteran and ex-POW who swept her off her feet. Bob and Naomi married, and settled in Chicago, Illinois to raise their two daughters. Later, Naomi and Bob relocated to Connecticut, and Massachusetts before moving to Encinitas in 1985.
Nomi and Bob embraced California living, surrounded by family and sunshine. They became loyal Charger fans and season ticket holders for 18 years. Nomi was an avid bridge player, and enjoyed golfing at Lomas Santa Fe Golf Course where she got not one, but two official holes in one. Naomi joined Welcome Wagon, volunteered through the Assistance League of Rancho San Dieguito, and was a greeter at St. Peter’s Episcopal Church, well into her eighties.
Naomi was a vibrant, elegant woman. She loved people, Maine lobster, handbags of all shapes and sizes, March Madness, desserts, the Padres, snazzy earrings, porcelain dolls, dancing to big band music, and a crisp chardonnay.
After her husband died in 2003, Naomi moved to La Costa Glen where she made many wonderful friends. She often talked about how blessed she felt to live in such a wonderful community. Naomi spent her final years at Glenbrook Health Center, where she received wonderful, attentive care.
Surviving family members include daughters and sons-in-law Susan and Wayne Morrison and Nancy and William Oates of Encinitas; granddaughters Andria Chandler, Marissa Rinde, and Quinn Morgenthaler; and great grandchildren Brayden, Reagan, Benji, and Jade.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Naomi’s memory to the Assistance League of Rancho San Dieguito, 270 F North El Camino Real, Box 368, Encinitas CA 92024 or to St. Peter’s Episcopal Church, 334 14th St, Del Mar CA 92014.
