away suddenly on October 19, 2020 due to complications from COVID-19. A recent retiree of
Bank of America and resident of Dover, New Hampshire, Ren had just emigrated to Morelia,
Mexico where he had found a place where he was “truly happy” and felt he had found a home.
He was fortunate to have connected with a group of expats and felt welcomed and encircled
with kindred spirits and helped moderate one of the local expat social media communities. Ren
was a smart, beautiful, kind soul with a passion for travel and a knack for accents and
languages.
He studied at San Francisco State University as an undergraduate and at Columbia
University and the University of Adelaide for his masters degrees. Before working at Bank of
America, Ren worked at UPS on their voice recognition software and, prior to that, at EDS,
where he developed his penchant for bow ties over ties. An avid reader of current events and of
books, Ren could carry on a conversation with virtually everyone he met. Every place he
travelled, he would make friends, even managing to make friends with the flight crew in an
overnight flight to Reykjavik, ultimately spending the evening with the crew in a local watering
hole learning about the local culture. He was passionate about Italian motorcycles and adored
his Moto Guzzi, often taking long rides to watch the seasons change in the northeast. Ren was
also a European car enthusiast, having been an active member of the Mini social club in New
England and deeply in love with his Fiat.
He was a regular at the Book & Bar in Portsmouth, NH
where he relished their open mic nights on Wednesday evenings. Ren had a passion for foods
and, as the beloved older brother to Sarena and Stephanie Sunico, was the culinary guide to
exotic foods and flavors to his younger sibs. He was the reason the words bierock, dal, and
injera existed in the vocabulary of two elementary school children from Fresno, California. A
consummate gentleman and graduate of the Lourdes School in the Philippines, he was never
without a handkerchief, something that came in handy when dealing with his younger sisters.
Ren had a passion for art and was particularly fond of Frida Kahlo and Georgia O’Keefe and
was a frequent visitor to the Museum of Modern Art-a passion he shared with his niece, Eryka
Eady. Ren, although never a dog parent, was the best uncle a four legged kid could want,
tireless in his ball throwing and belly scratching.
Ren was a good son to his stepmother, Sharon
Sunico, moving home to help take care of her during her last days. She was truly proud of her
son, with every reason to be. We will miss this sweet man immensely.
His family would like to thank all of his friends for their kindness during this time. We would like
to especially thank Bland Holland and Norm Gill, whose compassion, support, and
thoughtfulness has been of such comfort. Ren will be sorely missed by all who knew him. In lieu
of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the COVID-19 Solidarity Response Fund,
American Lung Association, or the Trevor Project.
Our family would like to invite all of Ren’s loved ones, friends and family, to share a story, a fond remembrance, a photo of him, or even a toast with your favorite wine (Ren appreciated a good wine) on this page. His circle of friends span the globe and live in too many times zones to be able to easily fit into one online memorial, so please come together and share your remembrances here.
