

Thomas Joseph Sabourin M.D. of Solana Beach, CA passed away peacefully on August 8, 2026 surrounded by his loving family. Born June 2, 1938 in Saginaw, MI. Thomas’s early education was at St. Joseph’s Seminary, Grand Rapids, MI., Sacred Heart Seminary, Detroit, MI. followed by Catholic University, Washington D. C. Subsequently he attended Marquette University and graduated with a medical degree in 1966. He was then drafted as Lieutenant/Medical officer in the U.S. Navy during the Viet Nam War and served his entire two years at Miramar Naval Air Station. His discharged in 1969 was followed by an Orthopedic Residency at UCLA Harbor General Hospital, a Sterling Bunnell hand fellowship at Presbyterian Hospital in San Francisco, CA. and finally private practice in the Glendale, Pasadena area of CA. He had a thriving private practice but eventually formed Verdugo Orthopedic Medical Group. His 27 years of a very busy practice led him to an early retirement in Del Mar, CA. He poured himself into golf but didn’t find that to be as fulfilling as expected so he began consulting 3 days a week. Tom also became an accomplished artist and painted many portraits of friends, children, grandchildren and also pets, occasionally throwing in a landscape or two. His generous spirit will be remembered. He will remain forever in our hearts. Tom is survived by his wife Jean, his children John Sabourin, David Sabourin, Tim Sabourin, Catherine Sanders, Mary Sabourin, Dawn Sabourin and Laura Selecky, sister Mary Tourangeau and eight grandchildren.
A funeral mass will be held on August 25,2026 at The Church of the Nativity, 6309 El Apajo, Rancho Santa Fe, CA. In lieu of flowers a donation in his name Catholic Charities or to your favorite charity.
